I have a vague memory of Fords using a firing order of 1,2,4,3 , I don’t think that’s a Ford head but I stand to be corrected

Yes, you're right, it certainly was for the pushrod engines. I can remember comments from friends about the 'unusual' firing order and assumed it was previously the more common 1342. However, after checking, it goes further back than I remember. So I shall have to do more research later because I have a feeling it's going to bug me.
yeah, i thought ford but all the fords i could find had the studs lined up with the spark plug holes
well that would rule out ford
hmm hadn't considered it might be one of a pair, gonna go google v8s

After a bit more research, I think it's a pre war Hillman side valve head. It's difficult to find a conclusive photo of one, the best I can find is this -

I think you could well be correct - the photo of the other side of the engine clearly shows the distributor on top of the head as pointed out by "Ton-up" in previous comments.
correct stud layout, the little square casting protrusions are the same, dizzy and flange looks right. i think we have a winner.
