identify this vise?

I've had this floating round my shed(s) attached to various benches for at least the last 30 years.

does anyone have any idea what it would be used for, or even if it's complete?

it swivels 360 around the base.

Its not a dong then.

It may not even be a vice. the square part is for mounting on a bench secured by the screw, the round part is for putting anything you want on, e.g.. cup of tea. As in post 1

It does look more like a clamp. What does the screw attached to the circular platter do? Does it lock it in place? Can the circular plate rotate? Does it move it up/down?

the circular plate swivels 360deg. the screw locks it in place: it's actually tapered, so clamps *really* tightly.

@MBB : good idea.
it never occurred to me that I've been using it upside down. I've always screwed the round part to the bench, and clamped using the square bit (with a plywood jaw in it)

now I'm looking at it from a new perspective, I'm wondering if it's a swivel mount for a small, portable vice?

I would be thinking more along the lines of wood carving clamp. Screw a workpiece into the circular base, clamp it to a table.

Just broken a few old Vono beds. Got some nice oak from the headboards

I have also had plenty of good oak from Vono beds over the years and the bed irons are great for making things, The bracket screwed to the head board is a nice heavy cast chunk, I have made a few beds using all the metal work from Vono beds and put it on new bed ends, They have lasted a long time and then been donated to others, I have about 10 Vono bed spanners in the citric acid at the moment ready to be cleaned up and used as draw handles on a cabinet.

I think mine came from a scrapyard or similar, the cast lugs had been smashed off and the wood was free. I’m going to make a bench top with it

I think the last headboard i got from a Vono bed had 3/8" oak panel in the main head board that was solid not ply it had no joins and i used it to make the insides of a small roll top desk, I managed to get 2 small drawers and an organiser out of it and it was much better oak that most of the stuff i had knocking about.
