Identifying markings on Calor Gas 47 kg Propane Tank - Extra air compressor capacity. Few questions...

Sorry if this has been discussed to death previously.

I have sourced a couple of empty 47kg propane tanks that are in good condition.

I am then hoping to use these gas tanks to extend the air capacity of my 150 litre air compressor, thus allowing my media blaster to run effortlessly without the air compressor kicking in all the time

As things stand currently.

I have filled the Propane Tank to brim with water and left overnight (3/4 gas valve removed), to purge the remnants of any Propane left behind.

I have the drained this water out and left the tank upside down to drain any remnants of fluid out.

I have sourced a suitably rated 3/4 BSP M x 1/4 M fitting to replace the 3/4 gas valve I removed.

From there I am hoping to fit associated fittings to allow me to fit the following.

Tee piece(s) and associated M x M Nipples,
10 BAR PRV,
Air Inlet,
Air Outlet c/w air regulator and gauge,
Drain point.

During this process I have came across the flowing markings stamped on the bottom cowling of the tank.

Does anyone have any ideas what each stamped marking refers to ?

I am guessing 30 Bar is the max pressure of the tank.
108 L is the tank capacity.
2013/10 is production date ?
EN 1442 Eu Standards ?

Any tips and advice welcome.

it clearly is marked Property of Calor Gas SM, so they are not yours to use in this manner.

theres enough posts on the foums where users have used a gas bottle as an extra tank

but your wrong in your thinking

it takes more time to fill up a bigger tank at start up and also at refilling times

could in time wear your motor out as working much longer than recomended

I have tried searching. Cannot find anything regarding stamped details on gas tanks.

IMO Calor try to be too clever as they wont refund the original (one off) rental charge without the original paperwork and even then its on a sliding scale.........otherwise they will give you £7.50.

So it might be stamped but they have already been paid for it.

tend to agree with you even the finding fee is a pitance thats if you get the return fee from them

many companies wont fetch there own bottles

Didn’t know there was a finding fee. I just cut them up and scrap them if I come across them.

Tried to return them before and got nowt out of it. Not even a thank you.

Someone here (brightspark maybe?) has made blasting kit from them and may be able to shed light on the op’s question.

hi adding an extra tank for more storage capacity for blasting wont work out any better .it takes twice as long to fill and in use empties fast and the comp pump cant keep up with it your better off having 2 compressors coupled together and double the cfm output an extra tank is good if your using a few air tools or spraying for a consistent volume of pressure for short periods

I do know someone who had problems with there main compressor and it was essential that the air supply wasn’t disconnected. The tank that was connected was possibly 200 litres. There quick fix was to connect a small compressor with a 50 litre tank to the larger tank and get things operating again. I believe the small compressor didn’t even fill the tanks before the plastic unloader hose melted due to the prolonged running.

I have my old SGS 50 litre Compressor coupled into the tank of my 150 litre compressor.
The 150 litre compressor fills both tanks.

Is there a way of adjusting the pressure cut out switch so both compressors can run simultaneously ?

I guess I better ditch my gas bottle idea

From the other point of view,
If there was a decent amount paid out for taking a bottle back without the original invoice then they would be cutting the hoses off to nick them off your bbq..
It would just be another thing you have to lock away at night.
It is a bit annoying if you need a new one and have to pay £50+ for the 'deposit' though.

As said above, if you add extra tanks to the system it won't help massively.
When you first turn on the compressor it will just take longer to get up to pressure.
Sure, when you start to use the air, you will be able to run the blaster for a little bit longer before the compressor kicks back in again but then you are stuck again.

If you can run for 2mins now before the compressor kicks back in then adding on 3 extra tanks will still only give you 6mins total run time and will come with the corresponding refill times, ie if it fills in 2 mins now it will take 6mins after.

Blasters need a ridiculous amount of air and I expect you would need a hundred 47kg bottles and turn the compressor on the day before if you wanted to run one long enough to do a set of wheels.

Ideally you want something with a big cfm like a hydrovane or a road compressor.
Next best is just get more compressors and plumb them together.
Or a really big old school single compressor that will run continuously if you have the power supply for it.

He also added some sort of delay so all the motors don't try and restart at exactly the same time (but you might not need that depending on the size of the motors vs your power supply)

Hence looking for more output.

I had 3 of the CALOR LITE bottles........then they cant seem to make their minds up whether they continue or not.......so the supply gets difficult...none available.........so I end up swapping my LITE for a normal (which are cheaper).........then the LITE is available........so can I swap my normal for a LITE?....no sir, you can only swap for the same bottle....livid

I have a feeling there might have been a tee fitting added for the unloader valve as well..

You can adjust the pressure switch on one of the compressors so that it comes on at a different pressure from the other. I used to run 2 25l compressors into a 47kg propane tank & the switch on one was set 10psi below the other.

As has been said, it will not increase your working time as the compressors can only produce a finite amount of air.

But what it does do is allow the air to cool a bit in the big cylinder and let more water drop out or the air. I was always amazed at how much water I could drain from the big tank.
