I was only looking Luv, but ..... well ..... it was just ..... and it's only 5 miles up the road! I mean what am I suppose to do?

So here it is in the back of the van (well obviously the back. Who'd put one of these in the front seat?)

It's 3ph but only 2.2KW and should be quite quiet. Would like to strip it and check parts before starting it, have access to 3ph if needed. Does anyone have instructions?

I think there could be a Beautiful Old BIG Broom Wade coming available if this one pans out.

Hydrovanes are great bits of kit, not particularly quiet though, they whine away and generate a fair bit of heat, when you wire it up make sure the motor rotation is correct, I used to get mine serviced by a specialist compressor company and it never gave any trouble, it was bigger than that one but I cant remember the model, it ran in a fab shop with 10 people using air tools, air winches and a paint shop .

thanks Paul. Heat'll be good in the garage and the whine will be quieter than the thud, thud of piston. Has a plug on it but will ultimately hard wired to an inverter I'll make sure everything is correct before spinning it. Just want to check it's parts are ok and clean the filter check the oil etc.

Thats a Hydrovane model 15PURS. Looking at the picture its a very early model.
Service kit KM51 gives you some seals and internal separator element.
Service kit KT51 contains all the other seals required for a rebuild.
Oil needs to be Compair Fluidforce 2000. It holds about 1ltr.
Although the model number has changed it is a current production model.
The large hex nut is the oil filler. Fill to the bottom of the thread.
Behind the Chrome cover is a sponge air filter.
Any other info you need just ask I'll see if I can find a manual for you.

So what do you think the "2870r/MIN 220/220 240VA 8.1A" means.
I thought it was duel voltage drawing 4.7A at 420 and 8.1A at 240.
I'll fire off an email to ABB who bought ASEA (actually they were bought by someone else who were bought by ABB)

WOW, ain't this forum great.
How can you tell? And you're right under the Chrome Cone there is a sponge filter, it looked really clean when I had a peak at it. There's also a 'filter', quite course, near the motor end.
A service manual would be great I'm waiting for Compair to reply before going at it and a bit of space in the garage.

you might be right. Normally they will read 220/400 Volts if they are duel voltage.

ask i might be wrong! I do have limited experience of running 3ph motors on 1ph a lot of the euro motors are duel voltage and now i have worked out the layout of the plate i'm thinking it might be

Y is star and A is very close to the delta simile (move the cross bar down a bit)

I'm quite confident that motor can be run on an inverter (240v). Data plate reads very similar to my milling machine motor.

You may have to rejig the wiring from Star to Delta though. It's very easy on newer motors.

Is there an hour meter on the hydrovane? The critical wear parts on vane compressors are the tips of the rotors I believe. If they go too far they damage the housing as well and it's scrap basically.

I'm 99% certain that motor will work on 240v, 3 Phase.

After a quick look the the above ebay link I would not use a inverter you should be able to pick up a single phase 240v motor from a rewind co foir around £130.00. You would then need to change the pressure switch as there is a overload inside the switch which will only adjust up to around 9-10 amps. A single pases motor will run upto 15A.

Converting from star to delta(or delta to star) is easy on these motors. In the terminal box on the motor there will be 6 terminals. 3 will have wires connected to them. The other 3 terminals will be either connected via a brass bar to the terminals with the wire connections Delta or to the others without the wire connections again using brass bars to give Star connections.

This range was originally built to compete with the large number of cheap imports that were appearing at the time. Hours counters were not fitted as standard to keep costs down.

Why wouldn't you run an inverter? Just purely for the cost? I know they aren't particularly suited to start stop applications but see no other problem. The contactor and pressure switch could easily be rejigged to trigger the inverter.

You are talking about swapping a single phase motor from star to delta? Didn't think there was any option in single phase. With a single phase motor a complete new starter would be required and a suitable capacitor.

Single phase motors are not as durable as a three phase. You would probably need to uprate the motor rating on single phase to get the same performance. A single phase could struggle on start up with pressure in the tank, depends on the unloader/pressure switch.

I would stick with the original three phase motor. Run off an inverter and set the pressure switches to a wide range to minimise stop starts. If you intend to use a lot of air this shouldn't be a problem. If you are just using small amounts every now and again it's probably not so good. A vane compressor is better suited to constant running than a piston type.

The cost is the main reason I would not use a inverter but also as Hydrovane produce both single and three phase variations of these machines I just run single phase to minimise parts that can go wrong.

Both single and 3 phase versions use a 2.2kw(3hp) 2880 rpm motor. The single phase version does not run to well on a 13A plug but has no problem on a 20a supply. The single phase motors I get come complete with both start and run capacitors already installed.

There is at least 1 but usually 2 non return valves between the tank and the pump unit on this range. The pump unit will vent all internal pressure within 2-4 minutes after the compressor stops. This means there is very little load on the motor on start up.

I service approx 30 single phase units that apart from regular service parts are on original motors,vanes end plates and stators(cylinders)that are 10+ years old and used in factories and dentists 5+ days per week.

Sorry yes I did mean for a 3phase motor.

I guess I should not type while trying to talk someone through fault finding on a multi compressor control system.
