If Chunko` won`t make a spider.........

Bit of a rush job, and a pity because it`s one i wanted to do properly. She who must be obeyed demanded a spider to go with a display in a window, originally telling me an 8ft span, this got me all excited and it didnt have to be done untill january. Then it shrunk to 4ft and had to be done by the end of this month. Then i saw the space it had to go in (i also made the web for it to go with, wire rope and barb wire, hmmm) and got told it needed doing by the end of the week (last week!!)

So, several attempts later, and many ideas down the pan, I ended up with the one below. I`m not quite happy with it, but it had to go in today, when it comes back it`ll be tweeked.

Oh, and I know it`s anatomically wrong...

Technically the body should be behind the legs, so at the moment it looks more like a spider crab, but never mind.

Oddly, not for a halloween display (which would make some sense) it`s for a knitting window.

Nice agressive posture, rather than looking static, also like the texturing on the body.

Not a very big spider though, I get my scorpion onto you. Photo to follow.

Ahhh, the man himself, i used a bit of your patented overwelding technique to give it some texture. The body is made up of small pieces of the same bar as the legs, none more than 2" long, gradually built up then welded over at the end.

Oh, and i`ve already made the web, not as pretty as yours, it`s only a temporary display for a few weeks, so it`s wire rope strung between rawlanchors with eyebolts and barb wire in between. I`ll get some pics of the full installation before it gets taken down.

I could never compete with you anyway chunko, you work`s amazing and an inspiration, and i`m not an artist like you.

That said, come on, throw your cards down, wheres this scorpion

What is an artist? I was told a while back 'you cant be an artist because you cant explain why you make this stuff' She said her hubby is an 'artist'.
What? I think she meant that I do not have any high art ballocks attached to my work.

Really my scorpion represents the dichotomy between the insect/arachnid state and the paranoia of the human/machine world. Or did I just fancy making it. Ye Gods, around this time I realised why Van Gogh lopped his ear off.

Jay, you are making nice stuff, that qualifies you. So there. And the form is great, it took me a long long time to get over things loking devoid of life, and you hve got that already.

The form was helped by having a dead spider on the bench to refer to.

I like the texture overwelding gives, but i struggle with it, not wanting to sound big headed but it`s actually quite difficult to produce a "bad" weld when you need to so that it has any texture.

Next on the cards, i`m not sure, if any of you remember the "dancer" silohette I cut from badly pitted plate i`ve done a similar piece in a male figure that needs finishing off. I`ve got a few ideas i`ve had in the pipeline for a while, a full size couple embracing from welded chainlink and something from rebar. Sculpture isnt something I do that often, just something that comes to me. Ive got a few pieces to fab up at the moment, and another rusty VW to sort before the fun can begin again.
