I'm trying to decide whether to buy one these Titan rotory hammer drills.

It has a 1500w motor. Seems solid enough at 5.9kg. Unsure if a magnesium gearbox is a good thing or bad?

I bought a rotory type drill last week from Argos.GUILD brand £60 but it was getting hot in a very short time, so I got a refund. I believe the manufacturers were aware of the issuue. In the manual it said if the drill gets warm, run it for 2 minutes without load to cool it down!. It did not appear to cool down over that time. Waste of time. I was infulenced because I had bought 2 other Guild brand items over the last two years that have been good.

They are a buy for one hard job type drills for me. Kill it. Gey a replacement from Screwfix and hopes it lasts till the end. Sometimes they suprise you and go on for years.

Mates had a few of those, usually comes and borrows my Dewalt when they go kaput.
Three times the price but over fifteen years old.

Buy cheap, buy twice. If you want something dependable, go for a known good machine.

allrite for one offs but not daily grind. if u chisel off rendering on a house you will go through 3 but under warranty

one of the best drills imo is the bhr241 18v, love that thing. it the go to for chewing through a wall. 8-16mm upto a meter.
i've used a fair amount of different drills corded and battery. newer and older.

we went through 4 of those chiseling concrete off stone wall 3 floors high with 15min cool down breaks all day long

just the end popped off thats why they got returned as it had a split ring to hold the end on those drills was rather warm thought so they took some use from us

Mine is still going, cord strain relief knackered, brushes replaced and looks every day of its age of about 7 years. Done some big cores and a house worth of rendering mixing as well as sds drill work. Well worth it.

i do rate titan stuff not for day in day out 10hours a day knocking off render but i put mine through a lot before it died over quite a few years and mine was 2nd hand before i got it

ive alsoi got a titan strimmer thats woorks well

and a heavy breaker that wont die (or at least untill i said this)

Depends what you want it for.I needed some of our driveway chiseling away so I could fit a few concrete fence posts, the price of the drill was far cheaper than getting someone in to core drill it.As long as it lasted that job I was quids in, as it was it lasted that job and several other jobs and is still working.

I've got a decade old one badged as a Titan (I think) - a mate had one and the rotary stop mech seized up and sent his 80yr old dad rotating around a chisel . . so I make sure its well lubed.
The clutch mech failed - all the springs inside it broke, but I had been overloading it for a weekend - a bit of a rebuild and it still works.

DIY use I reckon it'll be fine - if you are expecting a cheapo DIY tool to have a 100% duty cycle though, you are in fantasy land

Put it this way, I had to drill a 65mm hole at an angle through nearly a metre of concrete with 8mm galv steel crane wire in it. Killed the Makita 110V SDS hammer drill, killed the Parkside 230V SDS. In desperation bought a Titan and that did it. Still going strong:

Is it the exact same model- the 653
They do variants and they look the same.

I only want it for drilling holes in stones/rocks/concrete mainly when using my wedges to split the material. Not for any chiselling

you can use it on both as i did even when i was in scotland it was worth buying that 50.00 drill and chisel

i know hes still got the drill as it will do plenty of work still plenty of life left in it

I have a similar £49.99 SDS drill purchased from B&Q's 25 years ago, I've spent more on drill bits n chisels, over the years, it's still going strong and it's definitely paid for itself.

Same as most, bought one; used it to chisel out a bunch of concrete, and after a few days (of graft) it died. Replaced under warranty, finished the job. Couple of months later, the replacement died taking out a chimney breast, also replaced under warranty. The third has seen 6 years of light DIY use since.

Manage your expectations, and it's a fine tool, but not pro level by a long shot.

I had one for years, I only used it for the **** jobs, abused the hell out off it and it kept going for over 6 years, finally died when using a 5"core cutter and hit a hidden steel beam spitting me off the top of the step ladder ( I know I know ) and it dropped 10 foot
