Imperial Acme threaded rod

I need a length of 7/8", 5 tpi threaded rod to make a cross feed screw for the surface grinder i have just got. They screws are available, for nearly £600 , so i will try to make my own screw and nut first. It is available to buy in America, but seems harder to find in the UK. Anyone know a place that might stock it ?

I suppose it would have to be John or the dials would be mile out. I can order some from the states, or if stuck screwcut some on the lathe. It would have been dead handy to just buy a bit in the uk and get it posted over.

There’s a gentleman on instagram who converted his 540 to ball screw , I ll pm his details.
Is it acme or square form thread?

If you go ballscrew it needs to be a similar pitch so the cross traverse feed works correctly and moves the right amount.
Also you need the ability to tickle off .0001

Some screen shots so you can find him. On a grinder with plenty of room a ball screw makes sense and with a dro like dB suggested pitch error on a cheap chinesium ballscrew is not a problem, cos you’re not be wanting to pay for a nsk one !

Ronan before you start spending money on that machine do some test grinds to make sure it's producing flat parts. I had the identical machine and although I initially thought it was in pretty good condition, more knowledgable people warned me that it looked pretty worn from the pics. I did some test cuts and found that it had so much wear it was grinding a hump on everything. On top of that the carrier bush that holds the far end of the cross slide screw (the one you say is worn) was worn badly oval and when I made a new one I found that the reason the old one was knackered was because the ways were worn down so much that the screw and bush was carrying the weight of the cross-table. Eventually I got sick of tripping over all the different parts of that machine and took a sledge hammer to it then phoned the scrap man.

Just don't go pouring money into it until you've confirmed it makes good parts. If you have an old small surface plate stick that on and grind it, then blue it up on a larger plate. Mine only contacted in a wide band across the centre 1.3

Thanks Pete, when i get a chance and have it up and running i will do the five block test and see how it is. Its difficult to know until you do some sort of test. I don't intend to pour money into the thing no matter what occurs, Hence me looking for the acme screw rod, i refuse to pay 600 notes for a bit of threaded rod.

The 5 block test won't tell you what you want to know. If the cross ways are humped and the chuck has been ground then the blocks will come out perfect yet everything you grind will be humped because the whole cross table is travelling in an arc.
