hi guys, these are what we are issued with at work and from what iv found online are fairly expensive. im currently looking to set up a small home workshop, are there any comparable alternatives that dont have the hefty price tag? i know they do less powerfull/cheaper models, just not sure how they fair.

i use a die grinder i bought for a tenner in aldis and it works brilliantly. granted i only use a small sanding drum on it but for the price its a throw away item.

even came with a three year warrenty that must be worth more than the grinder lol

air is great for the outdoors as it doesn't need power so no risk of getting electrocuted or shorting the electric out so it depends what your using it for.

I have an air die grinder and I wouldn't use it out in the rain any more than my Dremel alike. You are running a 2 kw compressor instead of a 100 watt tool. If the compressor is on I'll use it but otherwise don't bother as it's a bit air hungry anyway.

One thing that's noticeable with cheap air tools is they guzzle air, highly inefficient.

both have there uses. u don't use a club hammer to knock panel pins in dremel =small intricate jobs die grinder for rapid metal removal

i suppose it depends on your job, as i was a mechanic years ago and only had a few ramps available which meant a lot of work was undertaken out doors in all weather so air tools were the only thing to use. cant say i ever had an issue with them getting wet as they were well oiled and regularly cleaned after every use ,
i didnt like doing it and its not ideal but it got the job done and i still have all the tools with the exception of an air saw which died a few years ago to tell the tale.

I accidentally booted my air die grinder in to my pit half filled with water managed to fish it out with my fibreglass rods with a magnet on the end squirted some wd 40 in it and blew it out. re oiled it ran it again and its fine

I use a highly expensive Silverline air die grinder purchased of the Bay of Fleas, its air hungry and works brilliantly considering the price.

Doesn't seem any different from the other offering from Snap-on, Ingersol Rand, PCL or other big brands I've use over the years, it all depends on the size of the air compressor supply.

i think your paying for quality control as well with named brands as they are rigorously tested before dispatch including all the internal components.
cheap Chinese copies might have 10 dud ones in every hundred but sell so many and scrimp on the quality control so they hand out a new ones or give you your money back out of the savings so it doesn't matter to them, albeit annoying for the owner.

if your using them all the time though you cant beat branded good quality tools.

thanks for the replies, i suppose for the price these cheap ones may be worth a punt regardless. years ago i was between jobs and in a small fab shop with 5" air grinders and was less than impressed compared to the atlas copco equivalent. just cant believe the price differences.

Decent quality brand with good backup and not a huge amount of money but sadly still 4x what a cheap and cheerful one would cost.

The issue for you is if you are using really nice kit all day at work then you may be disappointed with the cheaper stuff. In my experience cheap die grinders seem to work just fine. I have a Blue Point 90 degree and £15 special sraight. The bodies look very similar but I think the Blue Point uses less air. I may replace my cheap one at some point but if I am completely honest it would just be me being a "Tool Tart"

while i was scouring ebay and other sites i never seen that particular model, looks a decent price as well for the power output. im going to watch that and have a think about it. i dont imagine for the home workshop i really need top line die grinders starting off anyways

The only thing to remember with many CP air tools is they have a 1/4 NPT fitting, a 1/4 BSP will normally nip up fine but I tend to use a 1/4 NPT-barb then put a length of nice soft air hose on it, make it feel more maneuverable

I know work places are daft when it comes to tools... but surly a £10 die grinder can't be compaired to one 40x the price. Only thing is I suppose at a tenner it's worth a punt

I have a very cheap die grinder. I also have a Snap On die grinder.

The cheap one has play in the spindle and feels rough, the SO one is perfect (though not as old). The SO one may be quieter, I've not really noticed - I don't use them back to back often. I'm sure the SO uses less air, it also has an adjustable exhaust which can be handy every once in a while.

But the real difference when it comes to getting the same job done is the cheap one naturally struggles if you apply decent pressure. The SO one? You can practically lean on it and it'll keep spinning.

I have an old cp one. its a nice runner very powerfull and doesn't use much air cheap ones are rough running and use more air
