Ingersoll Rand Model 242 Compressor

Hi guys,

I have recently, just today infact, taken delivery of this item. I got the item for free from a friend of my uncles, who has replaced the compressor with something around 1/5th of the size.

I have been informed that it should have a 3ph motor attached, although it has been run as a 1ph motor, and requires a little push to start it. Not a problem at all, as it was free to myself.

I have no information other than what is printed on the machines plates as to what it holds or performs like. So my questions are as follows;

1. Has anyone owned, or used one of these machines in the past?
2. Would there happen to be a wiring diagram available for the motor? Preferrably to run it in a 1ph location
3. Can anyone supply me with a little technical data about the compressor in question?

I do have a couple of pictures of the machine, although they are currently on my phone, and I need to search for the cable, which hopefully I will be able to sort and upload tonight.

I have one very much the same and am running it with a 3hp single phase motor.
It takes a bit to start if cold and should probably be 4-5 hp.

I think a few people on the forum have these compressors, i think someone mentioned theirs was made in the 1920's. (could be wrong though)

Not quite sure when this one was built, it was delievered at 8.30pm this evening, and I do believe I've annoyed the neighbours once again! Good job I'll be moving soon hopefully.

I've only managed to have a quick look at the compressor itself, and won't be able to have a proper look at it until after 5pm Sunday evening. By which time, I hope to be able to get a few better pictures with a decent(ish) camera, detailing the connections, identification plates and such like.

I did notice however, that the wiring has all been disconnected from the terminals, but I can definately confirm that it was being ran from a single phase source looking at the bare ended cable tucked away in a couple of boxes.

Still a little wary of wiring her up at the moment without having any background information on the machine itself, and don't particularly want to annoy the neighbour too much by destroying the garages! Are these units difficult to strip down and rebuild with new gaskets, etc?

I don't know whether the motors are any specific make. Maybe a pic of the connections on the motor could be handy.

They are easy enough to strip down and rebuild, i'm not sure on a source for spares though.

generaly they run forever no need to strip them the wiring should be quite basic. get the details of the motor plate . how many kw how many amps they will be pressure switch which might have details on a plate eg. voltage and current in amps

I'll grab some more pictures of the compressor and plates shortly. I've already received a nice complaint from the next door neighbours about having a van arrive late in the evening. Oh well, I believe he was also the one who reported me to the council for noise pollution during the day - the compressor will definately be getting run up for his pleasure before moving day.

Had a look through the Ingersoll Rand website and couldn't find anything model specific, so I've also fired an email off to their support team to see if they can help.

Oh lovely people they definately are around this area. I've had a noise pollution letter through about repairing my car between 10am and 3pm!

every thing looks fine but u would need to run the motor on a direct on line contact starter with the presure switch wired through it . the presure switch is a danfoss 3 phase 415v and 240v single phase . it will only carry 6 amps each conection . your motor is 12 and a half amps. u could link them all up giving u 18 amp but personaly i wouldnt. if u didnt want to go to great expense just buy a plastic box and a cheap contactor and wire presure switch through that. it wont have overloads in it but thats not a big deal as it is fused on supply. the motor isnt wired for supply it looks as though it needs conecting live to one link and the neutral to the other link if u look in the cover inside diagrams generaly stamped in . dont take my word for it mind

Not 100% up on wiring a Compressor in myself, although I do know a few sparks.

There does happen to be a couple of diagrams stamped in. One mentions Rotaz.DX Single Phase Wiring, another mentions Rotaz.SX Single Phase Wiring, the third mentions 220v 3 Phase Wiring, and finally the last one mentions 380v 3 Phase Wiring.

Now, I'll either be wiring this in at the new garage on a single suppy of 240v(ish) or would it be possible to feed 3 individual (240v ish) supplies through a Glock&Muller 3ph Rotary Switch so I have some control over the compressor, and connect it up according to the 3x 220v 3 Phase Wiring Diagram?

Right boys and girls, just to drag this one from the depths of time.

I have now moved house, and have the garage space and understanding neighbours I longed for.

However, I am now looking at getting this compressor up and running, so any advice on the bits I would need to purchase for the job would be excellent. I intend to connect this via the 3x single phase connection diagram on the inside of the cover.

Will I need any other parts to add to the compressor before I switch it on?

I will have it protected by a 3ph 6a MCB, with a Rotary Switch and Push Button Start mounted to the wall, so I have overall control of the compressor.

Any advice, pointers, etc would be appreciated. Sparkies don't seem to want to get involved with it unfortunately.

When you originally said "it should have a 3ph motor attached", do you mean that the compressor is so large that it needs the power available from a 3-phase motor?
Then the statement "it has been run as a 1ph motor, and requires a little push to start it" implies that the motor is ( or was? or ought to be? ) a 3-phase motor, but was wired to just one phase. This can be done, using a capacitor, but there will be very little starting torque - hence the need for the "little push".
For "a little technical data about the compressor": it is a V-twin, 2-stage, produces about 14 CFM, needs a 3 HP motor, lasts for ever.
Printed on the plate of the motor is the word "Phase" - what is stamped after that? Is the motor made in Italy? I think that the "Rotaz. SX/DX" wording refers to Italian for clockwise and anticlockwise.
You mention using some 3-phase wiring components - rotary switch, 6A MCB, push button start, and "3 x 240V supplies", but you don't actually say that you have a 3-phase supply on your premises?

eddie49 - I was originally informed that it was connected to a single phase supply, but should have been connected to a three phase supply, hence the need for a "push" start to get the motor going. I don't however have a 3 phase supply on the property, I am merely going on the diagrams printed on the covers of the compressor connections, these being Monofase and Trifase, Single and Three Phase respectively.

Under the Monofase heading are 2 diagrams, one entitled Rotaz. DX and the other Rotaz. SX, which I believe to be Clockwise and Anticlockwise respectively. Under the Trifase heading are a further 2 diagrams, one for 220v and the second for 380v, both are slightly different connections.

The compressor/motor does have a capacitor connected to it, and was also wired in. But still doesn't answer my questioning as the capacitor itself has the following printed on it;

On the plate of the motor it is indeed printed with "PHASE" however, there is no further printing on this line, and then continues underneath with;

I would prefer to get the most possible out of the compressor, as I will be using it to supply air to a Shot Blasting Cabinet, Compressed Air Log Splitter and a "Vehicle Repair Bay" in my garage, along with the possibility of using it for Light Spraying in the near future.
