Ingot Mould for lead

Hi All,
Just looking for a little advice / info. I dont weld and have never tried. However I am considering buying some welding equipment to try and make some ingot moulds. They are made with angle Iron and look like this

Any Idea what welding kit I would need or how dificult it would be to do?

Very easy job to do with a cheap-o stick welder. Just buy a bit of extra angle to practice on first!

I was looking at a welder in Aldi the other week. I think it said it was a mig gas / No gas welder. Would that do the trick? as for the angle Iron. I will get some to practice with first. Even if I mess a few up after making 10 or 20 of them it will still be much cheaper than buying the Lee or Lyman ingot molds. Even after buying the welding equipment.

If all you really intend on welding is angle iron or other steel of similar thickness then an arc (stick) welder would be the easiest and cheapest solution. You could easily do the same job with a MIG welder but you would likely have to spend more on the welder in the first place. Plus you have to worry about shielding gas which, apart from being a bit of a pain, is also an added expense. The plus is, of course, that a MIG welder would be more versatile if you wanted to weld other things (especially thinner things) in the future. Personally I wouldn't get the Aldi welder but there's a discussion about them on the forum at the moment which you could have a read through and make your own mind up.

A friend of mine used to make lead trinkets, he told me the biggest hazrd is "white lead" it's an oxide that forms when you get it too hot or expose molten lead to air for long periods. It forms a dust that is easy to breathe in.

It is also alleged handling lead then doing what one does with his pee pee can cause impotency

If you want to, you could buy a cheap stick welder, a box of rods, a length of angle and make them. But if you dont plan on doing any other welding to speak of, probably be easier and cheaper to find someone to make a couple up for you.
A pair of them, is about half an hours work with the right gear.

I already have ingot a ingot mold (lyman ones) its four small 1 lb ingots. However I wanted to make some better stacking ones as Im getting a new bottom pour lead melter. I will probably make a bunch of them for a few home casters I know. I decided to smelt old lead into ingots with a burner and dutch oven and then use them in the bottom pour melter. This will prevent the melter cloging with unwanted inpurities as they will be fluxed off in the dutch oven. Its mainly for casting bullets and the odd sea fishing weight. As for health and saftey issues. Just cast in a well ventilated area. You can use a respirator M3 type with filters for metals and organics. Always wear goggles and never ever have any water near melted lead. Water in melted lead will result in an explosion of 600 degree lead in all directions.


Plenty of casting information avalible on . Even guides on how to do it. The same princibles would be used if you were to make sculptures or keel weights for boats. if its just for sculptures and modles you wont have to worry about alloys or hardness testing

I'm at that st-age where I prefer to use a fine not too viscous ink!
