Interesting "metal" sculpture

I saw these when delivering to a customer in Waltham St. Lawrence this morning. At first I thought that they were metal. The customer explained that they were made from a chicken wire frame covered in fibreglass. They were then some how covered in fine iron powder and left to rust.

A very interesting finish in my opinion. The artist lives nearby and has some stuff visible in his garden that I will have to check out.

Seeing that reminded me of this picture I took in the park near us some time ago, life size and all made of chain link fencing, excuse the picture quality, its probably why I never posted it before.

Well mrcheese it is interesting but just some time I am thinking why to do something like that? Is there a purpose from Art point of View or a kind of manierism? Why not from Iron or copper bronze etc and have a physical rust or patina .Is there a purpose to be done from Chicken wire, is he try to express something as an artist?

I do understand buddy . My question from art point of view was what is the purpose of chicken wire and a fiberglass underneath?
The materials in the art they have a purpose and meaning.
For example if the chicken wire was visible it may express something like the emptiness or loneliness as we see a couple not know it is difficult to understand the artist .I do make this question as sometime we do things because it is easy not because there a meaning there.Believe me if for exampe you are in the uni and present and idea and 3,4 people they ask you why you do that and you are unable to give a good answer then the whole idea fail .

It is nice not mine though, just something that's sitting in a local pocket park, I don't have the art gene.

Clever way to avoid casting costs, or yrs of practice developing hammerforimg to that level, I guess.

Get a grip, it's been done like that because nobody has a foundry in there shed big enough to cast iron statues that big

The iron powder and resin stuff is quite clever and looks better than just resin casts, also sells well.
The chicken wire stuff? dont like it a lot, I have seen several of Derek Kinsetts works at exhibitions, I admire the way he does it and the effect but it still does not rock my boat. There are also a lot of people doing very poor copies of his work.
Materials in art? by my reckoning anything can be used as long as it is honest, wire, steel, cast iron or whatever is needed to get the effect the artist is after.

We went to Tittesworth reservoir near Leek and looked at some sculptures there and I was particularly impressed by the water man sculpture which is cast in iron.

Bill I think you're looking for explanations where there is no need to. Sculpture can be produces however the artist feels comfortable. Like Chunko says as long as its honest and represents the artist is doesn't have to have a meaning. There are some great example of different styles of sculpture on here and there aren't hidden meaning behind the techniques and specific styles its just an artistic mind expressing it self. Well thats the way I see it anyway, I personally prefer using solid bar to make lines and shapes but its only because thats how I like my sculpture.
