Interesting thread regarding Primers?

I have read a number of posts with hobbyists asking certain questions regarding which is the best primer to use, and does it stop rust etc, Just read this some of you may find of interest regarding primers and rust preventative coatings?

remember primers are pourous.so that result is to be expected.

given that primers (and nost modern colour ) coats are not intended as primary protection...what did they expect?

Exactly Mike.

As you will read on here in other threads, epoxy primer is being used more and more these days. The difference is epoxy primer is not porous and has some rust inhibiting properties. i've used it with excellent results, and Langy on here will know more about it than I, but the message is the same.

Bare metal, epoxy, fill, 2k hi build, topcoat. pretty much the best protection sequence you can get.

If you can epoxy the other side with equally as good prep, you're on your way to a good long lasting coating for your vehicle or whatever you're painting.

Agreed Epoxy is the way to go, That article looks to be written by people that don't know any better.
I can't think of any pro restorers that i know that don't use Epoxy primer.

I am pondering this at the moment. finally getting round to bodywork on my BMW 323i Baur resto. Have welded in new rear arches which look acceptable, it's not a perfect pro job just a competent (I hope!) DIY job that will keep the car going for 5 years or so.

The paint on the original bonnet had flaked badly and had rust spots under it. One side is OK, and has been taken back to the original primer with 80 grit and DA. The bad side has been taken mostly back to bare metal with DA and a bit of grinder/brush. The steel is fine except for some little pits where I have brushed sanded and ground the rust off. I don't want to grind back to get rid of the pits as I will have a far too thin bendy bonnet.

I have some rust converter stuff (hammerite one been sat in the garage a few years unused), and was thinking of using that to make sure the rust in the pits was dead, filling over the holes, then sand, prime etc (will be using cellulose). Will that work or should I do that plus epoxy primer.
