Internal stone wall spalling.

This has been an ongoing issue since moving in seven years ago. The area in the photo just sheds lumps of stone every now and again. The wall is dry and I am not aware of any defects.

I though similar…..and wonder if its the structure of the stone, combined with a mix of temperature rise and fall!

I thought flint and maybe the opposite of knapping is happening, the flint brick/stonework being under compression is flaking, chipping.

I'm not certain what it is, but the way it falls apart suggests a flint block. This is a party wall, so I am not sure how best to rectify it. Before long we will have an interhome serving hatch.

With your road issues, and now the wall……have you considered moving.

Joking aside….have you discussed it with the folk on the other side…..might just be their head board is against the wall!

I would have thought the best way forward is a structural survey, once armed with that and a solution/s you are going to have to have to talk with the neighbour next door, that might be a toughie especially if they are not experiencing any issues--yet but as it affects a party wall.

Quite likely. However apart from some external render cracking, this is the only area with a problem.

It is a plain wall both sides. Lime mortar I would expect but I don't know.

I suspect someone has used hard cement mortar on it, and the stone is now the weakest part.

Looks like its Blue Lais stone which is a mud stone which shales when Damp.
Unfortunately I wouldn’t be able to make a visit until week of the 10th
June.
