Internal vent holes

Hi, I've been making some farm gates and have sent them to be galvanized. The galvanizers have come back to me today and said they won't do them because all of the vent hole are not visible. I had all of the vent holes laser cut to nearly the inside diameter of the tube, so I'm a bit gutted. I've sent them pictures of the component parts but are still not happy.

Are they being a bit over sensitive or is it my own daft fault for trying to make too much of a good job? They can't see past the tube I welded in to reinforce where the hinge goes.

Not surprising,I feel your frustrations,same at Hereford galvanisers,a young lad was killed last year due to a lack of ventilation holes,they insist on seeing the holes.

There are big gaps up either side of the tube. Probably something like 5mm x 45mm either side of the tube, which has a much bigger surface area than a drilled hole. Yes, both ends are open

Is the general consensus that I should have made them visible or are they being over cautious? I've offered to take them spares I had made for them to have a look, but they say that doesn't prove the ones that are going to go in the bath. They want to see every hole

their bath , their men , their rules . It may not be right but its their game and if you dont play nice they will pick up the ball and take it home .
Be very glad that they didnt just drill 10mm holes where ever they fancied and charge you something like 12 quid a hole .

Completely agree. I've just not dealt with galvanizers before and didn't know if this was standard. My vent / drainage holes are 22mm x 38mm, so thought I'd done a good job

I've got 400 holes to put in before they will galvanize them... I'm glad they didn't do it at that price!

Theres no dealing with them , just be glad they didnt move the lot into the corner of the yard with a forklift , Ive yet to see one of the drivers get off , they will push somethings round the yard till they catch enough to get the forks under , but they wont get off the forklift ,,, or they strap frames to a lorry round the middle till they bow and see nothing wrong with it , complain if you like , best they do is refund the price of the dip , weeks of work in ruins and forty quid refund ,,, take it or leave it .

I dont really like our local galv guys , in case you hadnt guessed .

I've been getting on pretty well with them so far, so hopefully it'll carry on like that.

I'm going to see if they are interested in having a look past the tubes with a borescope or endoscope to save drilling all the holes. It might make it easier all around. Well, it'll definitely make it easier for me!

We just used to drill a 10mm hole in each end of the section to be enclosed so that it faced down & not easily seen once fitted. We never had no problem with either Acrow in Haverhill or Clark-drain in Yaxley. If we ever did miss a hole they used to charge about a £1 a hole.

Tidy gates there well done. Have you got some more because can't imagine how much Gate would be left after drilling 400 holes in the ones pictured. 8 bar must be a fair weight.

Yes, I've made 25 for a handling system and calving pens. They were wanting me to drill a hole in both ends of every tube...

They are too heavy really, but I couldn't get the thin wall tube most manufacturers use. I've kept the gaps close at the bottom so we can put lambs in as well when we're working with them.

I got all the steel cut to length and laser cut at mellards in stoke. They've done a brilliant job. I just had to make a jig for the tube spacings and stick it all together.

I've had a good phone call from the galvanizers as well. They have had another look and are going to do them.
