Introduction + Next Step.....

Hi all looking for some advice aswell as introducing myself. I'm around 6 weeks away from completing a ABC level 2 in fabrication and welding course at my local college, the criteria of the course is learning both Mig & MMA processes aswell as then fabricating in either of the 2 processes learnt aswell as a Science and calculations exam.
Now upon completion having never worked in industry or know anything about the welding industry, I guess what opportunities would be available to me providing I could weld and fabricate to a desired standard?
I myself currently work for the Royal Mail in a fairly secure position but would like a change due to lack of job satisfaction.
I've heard mixed thoughts on what the best thing to do would be, could anyone with enough knowledge weigh up the pros and cons of the welding industry to give someone like myself a better insight.

Hi Daniel,
From what I've learned about the welding and fabrication business, its rarely about how neat your welds are, more about cost and delivery times. There are soo many ways to start a business in welding its a bit mind blowing, and you would probably find yourself doing whatever comes along to get your income sorted in the beginning.
Its good to specialise early and earn a reputation for quality work in your field-that will command a higher hourly rate, but mostly I think you will find its a pretty cut throat industry and welding up cars and rotton crud will be your bread and butter till you get established. Think hard about your current job securities before you throw it all in to start welding in your shed/unit.
Maybe try taking on a few wee jobs for your mates or through local advertising etc-try to price the job on a materials,time+expenses basis, and see how far off the mark you are when the job is done. This may help get it right when it matters. There are plenty of welding jobs out there globally if you choose the non-self-employed route but its pretty mind numbing after a while, going from what my mates/staff have told me. Starting a run at 6am and finishing it at tea time can be as good as it gets, especially when it comes to welding up big stuff.
