Missed this section when I found the forum before Christmas.

Based in Preston, Lancashire
Metalworking has been my hobby for many years, mostly lathework and assembly.
About 5 years ago I bought a Cosmo from B&Q and made the obligatory welding trolley and a few other bits but quickly found that my eyes weren't up to it. I couldn't see the joints well enough.
I am waiting for a new auto-darkening helmet as a post-chrissy pressent before I start again. Hoping this will fix my vision problems.

Also looking to start a business making sports equipment, but that's a secret for now.

With your eyes a variable shade helmet will be much better, i`ve always used about 9 unless i`m welding stainless or ali. If you cant see the joints very well get your eyes tested, i used to have the same problem and found out that one eye focuses an inch or so closer than the other, didnt bother me in my normal life but when i needed to focuf on close up things i had to close one eye. A cheap pair of glasses fixed the problem in one go, and i gain 20 IQ points when i put them on rofl

Another thing that can help (although I suspect it perhaps a need for an eyetest you have) - but direct lighting of the work area can help, so if you've got a powerful inspection lamp, or even head torches can help.

Anglepoise lamp directly on the area that you are welding helps enormously. Welcome.

welcome to the forum Ian,,my eyesight caused me problems with low voltage tig welding until i purchased a "cheater lens" or magnifying lens to fit behind the dark lens of the helmet...If you stiil have problems after the new lid,try a search for "cheater lens"..they are made in different strengths up to x2 or x2.5 (i think) and are much easier to use than glasses....
