I've read the review on screwfix website, some say it's good,& some say it's not, but would like the opinion of someone who has used it regularly on bare metal, & how does stand the test of time ?
I have some doubts about using water based paint on bare metal !
I've used the toolstation (made by Flag) version a few times. It's not water based, its like hammerite.
Covers reasonably well. Not great to use though, and finish wasn't that great.
I went through the stage of trusting all the claims for water based paints brush coated onto railings and gates etc, I may have been unlucky but in my opinion it's a waste of time and money.
Even when I found one that went on ok and dried overnight the gate showed rust very fast and some of them even started rusting as a result of the paint.
I now use good old red oxide with Aldi metalcare over it and the results are really good, so far lasting very well too.
I swear by this stuff (not at it ) and keep some black and some silver in stock at all times. It dries pretty quickly and covers well and doesn't really need primer if you are giving it two coats.
I put some Aldi metalcare on a gate showing some rust at the stables a couple of years ago, no sign of rust breaking through yet and it's quite exposed to the elements up there.
Personally, I won't touch anything water based with a bargepole these days, whether it be paint, stain or preservative. Sick to death of finding that the stuff lasts five minutes before it gives up the ghost, else finding that it actively promotes rust, as rtbcomp mentions. If it doesn't stink to high heaven, I don't use it.
I've found that the bog standard chassis black synth that the local auto paint place does is a good paint for just slapping on and sticking well without need for primer. For a bit better, I go with their mid range synth enamel. I've stopped using primer unless I need a perfectly smooth finish on owt, (I usually never do), and I've had no problems with it on the adhesion front, (I have actually tested both primed and unprimed, and noticed no difference between the two for what I use it for, with regards to ruggedness and adhesion of finish).
No such thing as cheap buddy. Paint prices are going through the roof at the moment, the price of 5l zink primer has just gone up by a tenner along with black gloss topcoat. This puts a 5litre tub above the £50 mark, so £100 quid for two tins of paint We get ours from finishline who I cannot recommend enough but still, the bills hurt
