Is this a crazy idea which would never work? Electric throttle on compressor.

Hi guys. I run a compressor in the back of my van powering a tyre machine and air tools.

The compressor is driven by a Honda clone gx160, the exhaust exits through a pipe that goes through a hole in my wheel arch.

I have recently brought an electric start kit for it, which works great. The idea is for me to wire the switch in the cab, so I can start the compressor on route to customers address, so it is full when I get there (instead of waiting when I'm there, making loads of noise. The thing is, I want to be able to adjust the rpm manually from the cab.

I'm hoping this May work somehow (don't know if it's just for 4 cyl engines??? )

Also, what systems are available to cut the engine back to idle once desired psi is reached? My engine is de governed. I have seen the American videos on YouTube showing bull whip contraptions?

I was wondering if I could go DIY (and here's the part you will laugh at). I was thinking that I could wire an old electric window motor up to pull the cable back and forth, add a few resistors to make it run very slow?

Now I've said it it sounds even more stupid, so maybe I'll stick with asking if that tachometer would work!

it doesn't look like you get the sensor with that tachometer, and you cant use normal resistors to slow down the motor maplin sell a speed controller but its going to be hit and miss to control it, you could ideally use a servo like those used in radio control planes

to control speed once the tank is full you could use a simple 12v solenoid using a normal compressor pressure cut out switch.
once the pressure drops the switch cuts back in which would then supply 12v to the solenoid which would open the throttle to a pre set setting and upon pressure being reached the switch would cut power to the solenoid letting a light spring return the throttle to the idle position

I could have brought one of those tachos with a sensor, but in the description it says something about adding the yellow wire to the ignition coil?

Also, could you point me in the direction of a 12v solenoid and what pressure switch I would use? How would the solenoid be activated?

Is it a factory petrol driven unit, as all the ones Ive seen have had a solenoid plumbed into the pressure valve to knock revs to idle when the comp is full.

You could look at using a door lock solenoid from maplins to adjust the throttle from idle to full (or however you set it up)

Why not have a pressure gauge in the cab and stop the engine when it reaches the pressure you want, you're not going to lose much pressure by the time you arrive then just run the engine to top-up.

as for the pressure switch, just the standard type all electric driven compressors have the solenoid would be activated by the pressure switch and powered from the vans 12v supply

Not as such, it is basically a generic petrol engine, compressor pump and receiver married together, no real manufacturer, it does it's job, I'm just slowly upgrading it (things like the outlet valves etc) as they aren't if good quality. Can't fault the air pump or receiver at the minute though.

I have got a pressure gauge in cab, thing is I'm very lazy, and like things automated wherever possible. Also it will be handy to have it automatically idle when in constant use. And to be honest, I like making things like this, even if it is of little benefit!!

thanks for such a detailed reply, and taking the time to find that solenoid. Is that solenoid stroke adjustable in any way? I guess it would be pure chance if the 10mm stroke was the exact length to put it between idle and 'fast'?

You could jus add a lever to the solenoid and depending where you have the pivot you would have a longer or shorter stroke also length of lever will affect it
