Is it what we call a MEWP, a mobile elevating work platform ? A friend of mine had a recovery wagon with air cooled V6 Deutz engine. The engines were built in sections so the extra cylinders could be added to make V twin, V4, V6 etc and it was a brilliant engine with a massive cooling fan at the front.

Its not hard to kill off an air cooled Deutz, lose the belt to the fan and its game over. Upside is barrel and piston kits are not expensive, also easy to work on. You need to put the pistons in the barrels first and lower them over the con rods before pushing in the gudgeon pins.

Just had a look round and Deutz are supplying service for Genie lifts so it probably is a Deutz engine. Yes 8ob, plenty of cooling needed when they are working hard.

They are great engines. Worked on a few - they used them in Lambo and SAME tractors. I bought so many bits (they were popular in Norfolk) I got invited to the factory for a tour as I was going to Italy anyway. Really interesting. If you need any help at all, Deutz is now owned by SAME and is SDF. Their headquarters in Treviglio has a massive museum and archive which is really interesting. The archivist is really helpful and has sent me manuals and things since my visit when I've needed.
They were popular in chippers too. The longer ones like in the SAME tractors had a massive issue with air cooling. The scoop I mentioned tapers towards the rear. This means the rear cylinders get progressively less cool air than the front ones. That side of the fins is always blocked with crud as well. The best thing about them is they are totally modular and the same engine goes in lots of different things.

Thanks everyone, so Deutz engine it is with a Perkins fuel filter.
If a diesel engine spils it oil out through the exhaust it is likely a crack in one of the cilinder heads or a valve seal?
Replacing one of them is possible, I think?
@8ob you replaced four barrels and pistons, may I ask how much those were?

Bob may have a better price but I paid about £100 per piston and £200 per barrel from SAME.
It may be something simple as rings and valves. The last one I re did had bad rings and valves. It was doing the same. Valves were coked up so not working properly as was the whole port / manifold to be honest. It needed new cylinders also as they were out of spec even with oversised rings.

I think the first thing to do is identify the engine, there will be a plate/tag on it somewhere, whoever supplies bits for it will need this info. Next I would remove the injectors and carry out a compression test, you should be able to evaluate state of play from that before stripping it down.
