Is this a stupid idea - switchable tanks

I will very soon be the owner of a 3hp, 90 ltr Burisch compressor (pretty much same as the well known Wolf Dakota).

I will be using it (eventually, when the metal work is done) for a DA and spraying, and I'm not sure the 90ltr capacity will be enough.

I'm on the look out for a used/spares tank to plumb inline to help sort this out. Budget is the biggest factor, but I was looking for whatever comes up at the right price, between 50 and 100 ltr.

Then I got thinking, what if a suitable 200 ltr came up - would it be possible (and a good idea) to amend the plumbing so that I could use the compressor to fill either tank (not both together), based on what I wanted to use at the time?

its not so much the size of the tank but the amount of air the compressor is able to put in as you take it out, the cfm as its known. my 90 Dakota has painted a transit tipper and a Landover with no problems however a DA sander is a hungry beast and may see your comp running over its duty cycle if your not careful,

I would opt to keep the tank as is and fit the 1/2 take off on the tank end for a bit more oomf.

Switchable tanks isn't that easy as you have to switch the control of the pump over at the same time. If you really need more capacity just add another tank and use it with the existing one if you need to.

Proper tested tanks can cost as much as a compressor anyway, so I'd get another compressor rather than a tank, that way you'll get the extra CFM as mentioned above.

I have a 50l compressor and a 100l receiver, I just have a bypass for the receiver when I don't require it.

Another 200l would be too much I think without another compressor. When I was spraying I fully charge the system and it lasts for a while but then the compressor is working to catch up. For spraying it's fine as I'm working at a lower pressure and CFM requirement but for higher CFM you probably would be better off with another compressor like the other guys said.

I'm not suggesting running the 200ltr and 90ltr together, I know that would be too much for the pump.
My idea is to make it so that it filled either the 90 OR the 200, depending on how much air I needed at the time.

You are only going to give yourself 3 times the stored air,once you use it it's going to take a good while longer to reach a decent working pressure again. If you need more air then it will produce, then you Need a bigger pump not more storage

Would be easier just to add a 100l receiver for the 190l combined and cheaper unless you have acess to a cheap 200l one. You could do it either way though if that is what you fancy.

150l seems to work good for me with a 14.5cfm pump, 200l would probably be okay but once it kicks in it will take a bit to fill.

Get an electric DA.........3hp compressor will never keep up, unless you are hardly using it.
