Is this any good?

Hi Everyone,

Im new to this forum, I've never tried welding but have seen it done a fair few times, heres my issue

I saw this on Gumtree,

Its a Buddy welder powered by a honda engine and produces 100 amps

He wants £200 for it

Would this be suitable for working on my car and welding brackets to my trailer

Arc welding is very difficult on cars, especially for a beginner, bordering on the impossible until you have loads of practice.

For brackets a cheap arc welder costing about £40 would do the job.

Unless you have an issue with electric supply, I suggest you are close to a Clarke 150 MIG with your £200, that would do cars and brackets up to 5mm with some prep and easier to learn with

Generator arc welders come into their own for heavy stuff, 3mm and over, where you can't get a mains supply. Lots of work on farms might fit that. Jobbing welders who can't rely on finding a power supply where they are called to etc.

If you have a mains supply, even with an extension, you're better off with a mains powered welder. It's cheaper to run and less to maintain. 100 A is a bit low anyway.

If working on your car means body panels as it probably does, any arc set would be very hard to get good results from.

I'd have thought you could get better value for your £200 elsewhere.

try and get a mig as they are easier to learn with especially for car bodywork
