Is this any use/good?

Long story short, My uncle has been given one of these:

by a supplier for free (I'm not too sure why) and he has offered it to me.

He say's it's about the size of a car battery and it runs continuessly (sp?) and although it's not really loud he reckons it would be annoying in a closed garage. He hasn't used it for anything, just turned it on to see what it was like.

I can't see what use it is though. I was thinking it might be OK for primer/underseal. It's free so I am going to take but I am not sure if it will be useful.

What do you reckon?

Like all these things, they never mention duty cycle. I doubt whether it would run continuously for long. Probably OK for the touch-up or blowing tyres.

It's free so you can't turn it down anyway, even if it was pants.
I'd have thought the duty cycle would limit what you can do with it but according to the manual it can be run continuously so sounds like not a bad bit of kit. The gun supplied with it will probably be pretty poor quality but a half decent replacement won't cost you a great deal.
Try it, see how you get on with it and post a review, it'll be interesting to know what they're like .

Yeah I had a read through that manual and I noticed it says it can run constantly, he said it would be annoying though. I suppose I could stick it outside the garage and run the cable inside when I use it.

My uncle did mention that it has odd couplings. They are a hook and screw type job.

It actually says it should NOT be run continuously on page 3 of the manual and refers you to the specification, where it says it can be!

Perhaps it means continuously for 10 mins!

It will be a noisy, annoying little thing, it'll probably sound like one of those 12v tyre inflators, only louder .
I think I know the type of fittings you mean, you should be able to adapt them somehow if you ever need to.

It will run constantly when in use, as it has no receiver. It will be a constant bleed gun to let unused escape and the compressor runs continuously, even if you are not using air.

My first compressor was a Clarke jumbo which was a similar unit. It would spray to a fashion, pump tyres etc, and even run small air tools (ratchet)

i used mine for a couple of years before a bought a proper compressor, if you already have a compressor I’m not sure what you will use it for.

Like a lot of things it depends on how competent you are with a spray gun and what you intend to spray, a professional sprayer can get a good finish with a spray can ! If you intend to use it for things like tyres etc then its perfect, for a respray on a car, as a relative novice, then its not the best tool to use.

but if its free then there's nothing to lose !!

I am building my own HVLP sprayer to do the paint on the car. this would not be used to respray the car.

It would be good for blowing off your bench and inflating tires / air mattresses, but that's about it. I'd take it if it's free.

Why not add a reciever with a pressure switch?
Shouldn't be to expensive and if the compressor eventually packs in easy to change for something else.
It's sounds a reasonable small compressor 1.5hp and 7cfm, may struggle to spray a car but a reciever would make it a hell of a lot more useful.

I think you'll find that just behind those odd couplings there are standard BSP or NPT threads so you can swap to decent quick couplers.

I got rid pretty soon after recieving it. It was way too loud to be of any use plus it vibrated like mad.

Its free (gratuitous gift???) so I'd just sell it on and but the money towards a larger comp with a reservoir..........

Hi Never look a gift horse in the mouth, The comp will be fine for light duty work. It's main advantage is it's portability
