Is this hss ?

Just been given some steel offcuts. Bought some pallet racking and said I could have some bits and pieces.
The big chunk rings like a bell and can't be scratched. What is it? Bet its worth a bit

I very much doubt it would be HSS. But, nevertheless, worth a good deal more than scrap value!

Could be any one of umpteen steel compositions. Could even be leaded, but I doubt it, unless from an educational establishment. That one piece, at about 13kg, would be parked in a corner on my workshop for use as and when, but I expect shipping might be an expensive extra.

Looks like its been cut on a cold saw, give it a dink with a centre punch.

Could be gauge plate, I would cut a sliver off it, get it red hot and quench it, if its a carbon tool steel it will be glass hard, I googled the writing on it to no avail so could be anything.

Could always send a sample away to be tested, not sure on the cost but if its something exotic you could make it back selling chunks.

Cannot be HSS if it's cold sawn.

You could try the spark test...
