Is this hss ?

Just been given some steel offcuts. Bought some pallet racking and said I could have some bits and pieces.
The big chunk rings like a bell and can't be scratched. What is it? Bet its worth a bit

try drilling it with an old sharp hss drill

Looks like its been cut on a cold saw, give it a dink with a centre punch.

Could be gauge plate, I would cut a sliver off it, get it red hot and quench it, if its a carbon tool steel it will be glass hard, I googled the writing on it to no avail so could be anything.

Could always send a sample away to be tested, not sure on the cost but if its something exotic you could make it back selling chunks.

Cannot be HSS if it's cold sawn.

You could try the spark test...
