iveco timing belt

Probly not the best place to ask this but know some of you work on vehicles. Our headgasket has gone on the iveco van it's a turbo diesel 2001, it's either 2.5 or 2.8.

I used to work as a truck mechanic and done loads of head gaskets, engine strip downs and the like but only on big truck diesel engines and thus never come across a cam belt before!

I've got the covers etc off and we've got the workshop manual for the van, everything's good apart from the tensioner, it says insert special tool to release belt tension.

Thinking on i should have got a pic of the tensioner, is there a way to release the tension without what looks like this iveco special tool, I've had my pry bar in it and it pulls back a bit but doesn't release the tension.

The tensioner looks like a plunger going into a housing and on the end where you put this tool is a washer on the end of the plunger with a hole in it.

A quick google brings nothing up, just wondered if anyone on here had any experience.

you will need the special tool to replace the belt so as not to damage it, does it show a pic of the tool, can you make one ?

It looks like a spanner but must be more to it than that, it's number 14 in this pic...

also looks to be a special crank locking tool . ive had afew engines similar where all timing depends on locking the crank up in position with the tool .

Appears the tool is just a spacer, it looks almost identical to the tensioner in this video.

Can't understand a word of it but you get the idea...

I'll be able to work out TDC no.1 by removing the cam cover and looking at the valves then replacing the cam cover to finely tune the timing with the marks on the cam pulley and cover then if I mark up the crank timing gear with a mark against the crankcase it should save me having to knock up the crank locking tool. I'll be thoroughly marking up the old belt and the pulleys with tipex to cross check against the fitting of the new belt.

Get me back to proper engines with timing gears and pushrods or timing chains, cambelts are tosh!

i have done one of these and the special tools are not really needed.
and yes the tool the tensioner back is just a spanner that will fit in the recess on the plunger of the tensioner.
also check the belt when you get it and count the teeth on the old one as there is two fitted and the only difference is only one tooth on the belt.

Cheers for the pointers, the guy in the parts place said there were 2 belts for this engine and to take the old one down. I'll make sure to count the teeth to be sure it's the right one.

The belts usually have the number of teeth and width marked on the belt or box. But best to actually check, There are two belts for the Land Cruiser and the motor factors got me the wrong one, good job I checked before driving home.

Before u take the belt off mark 2 or 3 belt teeth edges with white tipex coat the tooth edge and the tooth recess on each pulley that matters re timing IE crank pulley camshaft/s pulley/s and fuel pump pulley. Take belt off when tipex is dry. When u get the new belt count the teeth edges on it and paint the ones that match the old belt then install new belt making shure ALL the white marks on pulleys and belt marry up. Simples!
