A while back I followed the steps of a fellow X-Type owner by drilling a hole in the bottom of the AWD transfer box (TB) to make oil changes far more simpler as Jaguar in their wisdom didn't design a correctly functioning drain plug into the TB and instead opted to call it 'sealed for life'. The TB is a notorious component of the V6 engine X-Type's for having premature failures due to low oil which is worsened by it's capacity being only 600ml and being situated alongside the exhaust and bank 1 catalytic converter causing very high temperatures.
The current set up I've got now consists of a 1/8" NPT tapered plug giving a very low profile and the filling being done by a hose tail adapter being threaded into the original side plug which sits too high to fully drain and too low to fill from. The hose I'm using is Cohline High Temperature and Oil Resistant hose which is fed up to the engine bay to allow a very easy and pain free filling process.
This is I guess the second iteration of this modification I've done now, the first consisting of a M8x1 threaded hole which was used for both draining and filling through the use of a removeable one way valve. It was a little messy but worked well. The first plug I used was a modified engine oil drain plug which used an O-ring to seal against the surface I filed flat(ish) then I replaced that for a lower profile shouldered plug which used a copper washer but began stripping the threads from the torque required to seal.
The original side plug included a magnet and now with it replaced leaves the transfer box without one. I'd like to add one into my new drain but unsure the best way to go about it, just drill a hole into the end of the plug and press fit a strong neodymium magnet into it?
