I'm looking to join two pieces of 50x50 box (trailer drawbar extending). I am fairly competent at welding, arc is probably my least favoured but I have been getting used to my Clarke at home.
The box is 3mm gauge. I was hoping to extend the drawbar on my trailer.
Should I bevel the two pieces, tack, check for square, then butt weld all the way?
It was mentioned in my "trailer" thread that I should also fish plate the join. I am not too familiar with fish plates. Would I create diamond shape pieces and weld four of them over each join?
As it's a trailer drawbar, should I also put some bolts through those fishplates or am I going a little too far and paranoid about strengthening the join?
Failing that, any other idea to extend my drawbar would be appreciated.
The make the drawbar more stable I'm going to get two pieces of angle and make a partial a-frame.
Thanks.
