Joining cast iron pipe to MPDE

My dad has a broken cast iron water supply pipe that runs from a tank below a spring to his house. The house is on the mains now but the water is still used in the garden. A digger broke the pipe. Since the photo he's excavated back to good pipe and wants to replace a 6 foot section.

The cast iron pipe is 50mm exterior diameter. He's found some MPDE pipe 50mm OD but needs to join the two. Any idea how best to join the pipe? The proprietary connectors assume a screw thread on the cast pipe but this pipe doesn't look like it's joined by screw connectors.

If it's gravity fed just use a flexseal connector.

Would a 50mm F/F push fit do it? Or is the cast pipe surface too bad?

When a digger pulled a pipe in the field behind here they put the new section in with clamps. That’s mains pressure though.

No problem joining that, 2” Johnson’s coupling will go to both the iron and mdpe. Mdpe will need inserts.

Nothing against the plastic UC`s providing the pipe is in good condition (rare), they only have an oring in them and plastic grab ring with very little scope other than doing them up by hand ,tightening them further does nothing. The Johnsons have a gurt steel ring baring down on a big rubber tapered olive, so much more scope and they are also a lot stronger.

Thanks all. Just going through them at the moment. It's gravity fed and has about 3m head of water where the break is. But it's good if the join never leaks so something fairly robust would make sense.

Presumably you would need a metal insert for the MPDE pipe for the Johnson coupler. Most of them on the internet seem to be plastic.

Is any part of the product code legible on the 2" Johnson you are holding in your hand? I looked through their website and could not find anything looking like it. A code would assist malcom to find a supplier for one. Closest looks to be a DN40 Maxifit or DN50 Megafit or the smallest Quickfit one.

philmac transition couplings are pricey but very good. i always keep them in the van as they fit every pipe up to 2" nominal bore. over that i go VJs

Looks like he has also been asking a local handy person and seems to be going towards a flexible coupling sleeve. I'm guessing it should be OK for a low pressure connection. The mention of inserts was very handy.

These are brilliant, I used one to join to lead pipe for my outside plumbing to the garden tap and another to cap a pipe we didn't know was there till that burst and flooded the yard.

Flexis are meant for soil pipes etc so should work fine for a gravity feed system, so long as you keep the connection stable.

the philmac utc squeezes the seal and collar up tight with pliers, they're better than the plasson fittings in that regard.

but i agree with the johnsons, can crank them up onto any old ****e lol
