Joint prep and advice...

I've got some 5mm thick U section that needs joining to some 2mm thick box section...

I was going to prep the U section with a bevel on both sides before welding.

Would this be an exceptable way to go using some 6013 2.5mm rods??

I've done afew test runs on an offcut of the U section and get about 2mm penetration @ 80amps... So should be ok when join it to the box section I think?

Im still relatively new to welding so hoping for some friendly guidance and advice.

How are you joining the box to the channel, in the gap, to the end etc.( can't visualise it from your post)?

E6013 will be fine.

ah yea, sorry was abit vague there...

Right the U sections will be at 90 dgrees to the box section, Like this...

it is hard to answer without knowing if the sections are joined end to end or one section on top of another but 6013 at 80amps is quite alot of amps for 2mm material so it would be quite possible a few holes will appear! you could try running short lengths of weld and allowing to cool abit or a 7016 rod at 50-60amps may help

I did wonder, I'll grab an off-cut of the box section and have a play around...

The U section will be joined to the side of the box section, like this...

Try using the E6013 at about 65/70amps on the flat and maybe about 85/90 amps (turn it up as much as you can without burning through) for the fillets, dragging it along the joint.

Sorry about the crude drawing, prep the channel only where it's marked in red, no need to go too mad a slight chamfer will do.
