Just checking that this JSP mask has the correct filters on for welding? I bought it a while ago for spray painting. I think I'm going to have to have a shave to get it to work properly though.

Yes, a P3 particle filter is the right one for weld fumes.
Face fit is a whole other story... Yes clean shaven is just the start... But to be honest if you're just wanting some extra protection while welding a bit at home then it'll probably be ok

Only just started. Welded for about 20 mins over two days so far. Would like to restore my Car If I get good at it. I could shave down if I was going to do a lot.

I'm not saying don't use a filter, but.....
I'm now 69 I have been welding on and off for 50+ years, sometimes days at a time then some time off, I've never worn a filter or air fed mask at any time for welding, but I weld in a fairly well ventilated workshop or outside depending on the job.
I use a high end mask, no air fed bits to restrict my access or movement, I never felt I've been in danger including the few times very very early on when I welded some galvo steel, but air fed masks weren't even available then so it was standard practice back then...grind n weld.
So far I haven't suffered any real long term effects from welding apart from less cash in my pocket, due to expensive equipment purchases.......my choice.....
I can see that welding all day, day in day out, and being in confined spaces with welding fumes isn't good for your health, but just think about all the other fumes we breathe in over the years, so let's just be realistic on how much we have to wear H&S wise, considering some of the costs involved and how much time we actually expose ourselves to possible threats to our health?
My take on H&S these days:
I agree that H&S is important, but a lot of the time these days it appears to be over zelos chair based office workers who dictate H&S, who have never done the job, but just have paper H&S qualifications, or management that have been air dropped in from another industry, again without knowing the job...but as an ex-service engineer, I can definitely tell you that the quickest way to get a machine back up and running isn't always H&S compliant......
