Hi all. Just decided to join because I've been lurking for a while and finally realised that I might actually need to ask about stuff at some point.
The MIG I have is my old SIP Migmate 100 that I bought a little over 25 years back when I needed to replace most of the floor on the Mk3 Capri I was piloting back then (S**t ! That entire sentence making me feel old as hell now ! ). For the limited amount of welding I do these days, and despite it having the usual SIP roller slip and erratic wire feed speed issues, it's been at least a semi usable tool. But now I've seen the fixes and workarounds for it them on here I'm itching to to dig it out of the back of the garage and show it some love. All the info I can find about the Migmates of that time miss out the 100 and start with the 105. I'm wondering if anyone know's if the 100 and 105 are the same electronically/mechanically, Or if the 100 isn't just a 105 with the wire feed on top?
I'm a reasonably technically minded person who's happy soldering and assembling electronic equipment (As long as someone else has already expended the brain sweat to make diagrams and pictures to follow), But I've had very little experience with the physical inner workings of welders because I've got a bit of a phobia about high amperage systems....... Yes, I know, If the plugs out it can't zap me, But that doesn't stop me having to double check the plug 20 times a minute while I touch anything inside just to be sure it hasn't accidentally fallen into a live mains socket while I wasn't looking !!!
I'll probably be asking a few questions about updating this one rather than what replacment to get as I don't use my welders for years at a time, Then only usually need them for a few hours/days of "Hot metal gluing" before they go back into hibernation. There's no validating the price of a new MIG unless this one dies completely.
From last time I used it I vaguely remember than the plastic wire liner and the tip threading on the swan neck were on their last legs, So when I'm sourcing parts to sort out the wire feed I'll have to grab some bit's to fix that as well....... Might be better in the long run to just get a compleat new gun and cables, gas pipe and a metal liner already installed if I can find one at the right price (Something to look into).
Anyway, I think that's enough for now. Have a good un' everyone, And stay safe.
Scott.
