Just bought this Mig 150 Welder, what exactly is it?

Hello I am new to here, did a night class in welding (mainly Mig) and have welded with a very poor hobby SIP welder on and off on my Early Scirocco's, Polo's and now Golf Mk2.

I just bought this from an old school guy in Port Glasgow. I was under the impression it is a Sealey Supermig 150 or is it simply an earlier model of the same? It's had some modifications and repairs but it seems good for £125. I just need a half size gas bottle or a source to fill one that might be ok.


Any thoughts, opinions? I have a helpful Sealey dealer near me in Kilmarnock. It's generally for welding thin 80's Volkswagen steel, you know (rolls eyes) the usual arch kit and valance rust that these cars always seem to get.

Welcome to the Forum!
It definitely looks very "Sealy-ish" to me. Don't think I've seen those horizontal ridges on Sealey casings before, though.
Why is there a trap door in the kitchen floor?
The rolling chassis it's on looks so precisely made, it looks as if it was factory fitted! - Maybe older Sealeys came with them, and ridges, too!
Looks as if it's been converted to a euro connector, and then back again, too!
There will be others on soon who make more sense, and are more familiar with Sealeys than me, hopefully!

Is there any info on minimum current on the front?

I'm just remembering those cheap MIG welders that Screwfix were selling a while back that wouldn't go low enough to be of any use on car bodywork gauge metal. They were red.......

Another question where can I buy a earth cable/clamp to replace this bodge if I can't get one from my Sealey dealer? something I can wire properly?..

Clamps are usually re-wireable so unless there's something wrong with it you can probably use that one again. For wire - anywhere that sells suitably beefy wire. Apart from the size there's nothing special about it. Generally it will be many stranded and silicone insulation for flexibility.

A decent welding supplier will have cable by the metre, you just need to open the welder up to see what size lug is needed and they will probably crimp one on for you, invest in a replacement clamp while you're there.

the cable in mine was simply crimped to the output of the transformer no bolts or screws and the connection had gone bad

that does sound good, does it have a good range
coil the output from transformer around a bolt put nut on and tighten up then you could bolt on the cable, however for some stupid reason I didn't do that I re-crimped it

Looks like a Telwin to me. Not bad sets. You can buy big inline crimps from RS to directly crimp your earth to the choke/transformer (whatever your machine has)
But you'll need a pretty big crimper to do that. I've crimped lugs onto transformer tails in the past and then connected the earth with a bolt.

At last! got welder set up with CO2, new shroud/spring/tip going to give it a go and potentially fit a new earth clamp/cable if I find its performing for me. Thanks very much for help so far, great forum folks..
