just got oxy acetylene kit

woohoo spoke to a friend of a friend and managed to get hold of some oxy kit

2 x full w size bottles oxygen
1 x full h size acetylene bottle
set of regulator twin gauges on each
20 mtrs hose
cutting torch
welding torch
2 x goggles
12 18 inch long silver solder rods (green?!)
some brass filler rods
mild steel filler rods
heavy duty sack truck to help move them
spanner and cleaning pick,rods

collected it all for the princely some of.........................

just got to wait for the part of my course where we use the gas equipment lol
just ordered some flash arrestors as it didnt come with them

chuffed to bits will put up some piccies of my welding with the mig over the weekend as it is taking some getting used to lol
bought it to repair some holes in my classic merc but need someone with real skill i think as it is a bit of a big project for me to handle i think

I think what archie means by warm, is that they probably arent legally rented by you, so you will have a problem when its refill time

Hi Dave, no mention of flashback arrestors or check valves within purchase list, if you do not have one or other, be prudent to say you best not use till you have them, thus said, depending on how old this gear is, regs state F/B's, check valves should be replaced every 5 years. Be safe, O&A can be wicked stuff if anything goes wrong!!

at bottom of the list next paragraph didnt come with them so ordered some from ebay link
also some of the hose looks a bit tired so was going to get some more 15 m hose complete with one way valves but skint at moment so will have to wait and i dont fancy learning the hard way with o/a lol

A brass rubbing should reveal the company concerned.

When they're empty, just take them back to the company concerned and explain the circumstances (but say you came by them yesterday). Then ask for the reward to come off next year's rental!

I assume many refill companies will take them off you and sign you up as a new customer, but without the "new customer" deposit charge, as you have returned some "lost" bottles.

Not quite that easy, if the bottles are really old boc or air products will not take them back, a agent will also refuse them could be a problem, even the scap man might not take them

Ah well, the oxy one, at least, can be cut up (valve open!) and weighed in. The Acetylene one may cause problems, though..................

i got my replacement hoses and flash arrestors do i need to seal the joints at all or are they self sealing (i know not to use ptfe) my hoses have connectors fitted to them already just wanted to check before cocking anything up.

You don't / shouldn't need to use any type of sealant. They seal by means of the tapers on the fittings.

should i give them a clean up with anything (fine emery or summat) as they are not new

do you know they still not left the shed since i bought them as i am bricking it lol

i really dont want to make a big mistake with these

i had a college course set up but it seems to have fallen through as the tutor doesnt have the hours free to do it

Don't use emery on the bullnoses, if they need a clean, use scotchbrite or wire wool, keep the debris out of the reg though, when fitting the regs I like to finger tighten the nut and then give the reg a slight twist to seat it as you finally tighten the nut.

I wouldn't clean the tapers with anything that might scratch them up too much. Just make sure they are clean, when fitted and under pressure maybe pour/spray a bit of soapy water over the fittings to see if there are any leaks.

If anything does leak and can't be sorted by nipping it up a bit more then i would chuck the two fittings away and buy new.

by fittings i meant the regulators have a few bangs and knocks sorry i wasnt clear on that
however hoses new arrestors new welding torch is a sapphire and havnt looked at the cutting torch yet
