keen newbie welder

he all im jason, im new to this site and bit of a keen dubber on the side.
im looking at restoring my 71 1200 bug over the next couple of years, which means im gonna be doing all the welding my self!
i have a sip handymate gassless mig welder which works rather well, but im blowing holes in body work even on the low setting.
now as it stands im using 0.08mm flux cored wire so my thinking was to go down to 0.06mm wire?
would this work? im struggerling to get hold of this sized wire or is there a way i can turn down the power of the welder as i have it set on low and it wont go lower?
or am i missing some thing else all together?

Hello and welcome
gasless wire burns hotter then gas wire so will cause problems on body work. The general consensus is switch to gas wire.

Hi Jason, welcome to the forum.
You won't get 0.6mm gasles wire, it's only available as a solid wire for use with shielding gas.
Gasless welding always gives trouble on thin stuff, it's difficult to control the heat. Is your machine a dual purpose (gas/gasless) or is it purely gasless only? If it's dual purpose then there will be an obvious way to reverse the torch polarity when switching wire type.

cheers for the advice, my mig will only run gasless!
so my options are that i sell the gasless mig and then put the funds into a new gas mig?
any advice on a new welder thats gonna be used for diy car work?

Something like a Clarke 135 would be good if you're on a budget, I certainly wouldn't bother with anything smaller than that although if it is only ever likely to see car bodywork then you would get away with something smaller.
If you can stretch your funds a bit more, go for the Clarke 160TM, 30-150 amps and has a cylinder shelf on the back for refillable cylinders.
See a pattern emerging? Clarke's are highly regarded on here as just about the best of the bunch in the hobby sector, decent build quality, plentiful spares/consumables and they're just nice to use.

Depends really, same as wozzaaah says if its only goin to be used for bodywork his suggestion will be fine, or if you intend to use it for otherthings the PortaMig range are the way forward, PM weldequip, he'll give you the specs

you never know what you are going o find when you start digging away at the rot so I would be tempted to go for something that will cope with a bit more than just bodywork.

I just bought a Clarke 160TM from Weldequip, top fella, very friendly and helpful.
