Not sure it does, but the same statement probably applies to tigging an open root. Both require control of a keyhole to some extent to get full pen and fusion.

keyholing is where you would have a tight butt, you open it up with the heat and fill it out with your wire.... hence the 'keyhole' shape!
its more common on stainless where its easy to fit up like that so you dont have to allow for the gap closing up on you as your welding and your overall length changing.....
Ok, Ok, how about this then, if you think so called 'keyholing' is the same with mma as TIG make a 2 min video of you rooting a pipe that has NO gap and you keyholing the root in, you know, like you would with TIG... but do it with stick.

To be honest I have always keyholed open butts whether MIG, TIG or MMA in order to make sure you have fully fused the root faces of the prep.
Always found on TIG welded stainless steel closed butts there wasn't any need to keyhole as the root run would always penetrate through so long as you either feathered the prep edges or only left a tiny root face
