Kia Coolant

I've got a 2015 Kia Sportage 1.6 petrol. I've been meaning to replace the coolant in it for some time now because I suspect it's the original.

The stuff in there now is a deep green colour.

GSF parts and Halfords list a pink G30 coolant as the right stuff for the car but in the list of manufacturers it doesn't state Kia. Other parts sites list all sorts, G48 green, G12 pink, G13+ pink. The genuine kia coolant which is blue doesn't really say what it is on the bottles.

Am I over thinking it and I should drain out the green and put the pink G30 stuff in? A little concerned that all the green won't come out and I'll have a mixture of 2 coolants or does that not matter?

Ignore the colour, it means nothing as different manufacturers helpfully use different colours to signify different things on different products and not to any universal standard.

You need to go of the spec, some are ethylene glycol, some are propylene glycol (rare IME), some are inorganic acid technology (IAT), some have organic acid technology (OAT) some are hybrid mixes.
You have to be careful if you mix them as they can either cause more corrosion or turn to jelly.
Some vehicles may have problems with certain types of antifreeze if they have components in the cooling system which are not compatible with them.

Chances are on a 2015 it is going to be a basic OAT antifreeze, but best to check. It may state in a workshop manual, sometimes owners forums are also a useful source of information.

Thanks everyone for the info.

Looking at it I think I’m going to try and get out as much of the old stuff as I can then stick some Prestone in there, they claim it’s compatible with all engines and manufacturers and any coolant type so if there’s anything of the old stuff left in there then there shouldn’t be any reaction.

deionized water or soft water for
your vehicle and never mix hard
water in the coolant filled at the fac-
tory. An improper coolant mixture
can result in serious malfunction or
engine damage.
• The engine in your vehicle has alu-
minum engine parts and must be
protected by an ethylene-glycol-
based coolant to prevent corrosion
and freezing.
• DO NOT USE alcohol or methanol
coolant or mix them with the spec-
ified coolant.
• Do not use a solution that contains
more than 60% antifreeze or less
than 35% antifreeze, which would
reduce the effectiveness of the
solution."

Yeah that sounds familiar, I’ll get a picture of what it says in the manual tomorrow.
