Land rover paint options.

Paint choices,
I want a high solid paint this will sprayed in a large workshop with an airfed (compressor) mask and minimal extraction, I would plan to do 1/4 at a time. I only need a blow over so it's one colour.

Paints,
What are my 1k options, does anything exist?

If nothing is really available other than 2k I will just suck it up and look for a firm to do it, I'll just do the prep work beforehand.

If you have airfed, why not spray 2k. Your option would be a synthetic truck enamel which is more suitable for a working working vehicle or plant.

I've seen that means anything from painting over dirt to a flat down, prime and paint.

I'll just do the prep work beforehand.

How far do you plan on going? This could change what topcoat would be suitable, if you are going to 2k epoxy prime then the topcoat not need to provide as much protection as it would if you were painting over a porous primer.

just due to how our workshops are set up wouldn't be appropriate.

Being a business motor i just want one consistent colour and easy to tidy up when it inevitably gets damaged at work

No personal experience but the Aussies seem to like Raptor? Can be smooth or mottled from what I've seen.

I'd just go with 2K and invest in the gear to do it.


Many years ago I did a painstaking prep job on a car, but doubting my ability to spray well enough and not having the appropriate place to spray it I took it to a paint shop for topcoat that came highly recommended.
Needless to say, cost me a fortune, had to take it back because of the blooming in the paint and the overall poor quality of the finish and then a few years later the clear peeled off the base coat.

After that I just sucked it up, invested in the kit and tented up outside when I needed to do a big job - not worth the hassle of dealing a bodyshop.
Good paintguys are far and few between and usually booked solid if you can find one.

If it is a work vehicle and you aren't fussed how it looks, you could always just go for the classic olive drab look.

Last time I painted the LR I used Tractol enamel, it's been on about 6 years and starting to chip and flake a bit, but it's a practical & bashed about vehicle so the paints done what I'd expect of it, fair enough.

I used Tecaloid, paint with a brush roller or spray, high gloss finish takes about 24 hours to dry though.

Weighing everything up, i would suggest a synthetic truck enamel then. its non toxic in open workshop environment and if you heat it to thin rather than use a liquid thinner, it wont affect so much of the area with overspray, i would recommend the wearing of a full cheap suit though or you will have sticky hair for days after.

What are 1k acrylics like? Are they unacceptably soft?.

Not really suitable for your application. Too unstable against petrol diesel brake fluid anti freeze etc. Just my opinion. I've not used 1k in 35yrs

there are limits to my bodgery.

My winter project is to overhaul my SWB that has been a daily driver for the last ten years.
I'll be using Synthetic Coach Enamel applied by roller and brush.

Tractol dose go on very nice when sprayed and would be my choice for a working landy. I have painted the rear end of mine (110 drop side body) with it and it holds up quite well, it's used as a fire wood truck. every other year gets a touch up.

I have to say there's not much to beat the original paint that was on my 300Tdi. It's withstood 15 years of abuse in my ownership and is only now looking like it could do with a respray.

I have no idea what is used on mine, it's also a 300tdi young with only 225k miles on it.
