LARGE dia round bar-what is their application? (pics)

Does anyone know what (industrial) application round bars of this diameter are used for? Maybe i should refer to them as piles, but i think piles are hollow?

Has anyone ever welder such a diameter in industry? The dia is about 300mm.

There could be hundreds of applications but a few I know of are, flanges, rollers, mandrels, crankshafts and flywheels.

In the 70s I used to work in a foundry that cast the ingots these kind of sections are rolled from in all grades of steel to be machined into everything such as machine and valve parts. The ingots were sent to Sheffield to be rolled and came back to the warehouse to be shipped all over the world. They were sent to Germany, Japan, America and all the other countries we now see as industrial powers. Rolls Royce used to order billet for crankshafts and turbines and all was fine till British Steel bought it and closed it down.

I' seen these in one forge/ foundry in one of Fred Dibnahs "made in Britain" shows- for making traction engine axles and train wheels heavy engineering

Actually they are used in a prototype mouse trap.

Its really effective at dispatching the mouse.

Hiding the mousetrap under the stairs is proving more difficult

Normally chopped into little pieces and used in lathes to make a multitude of things.

They used to get us hacksawing through railway track when I were a lad!
