Large shot blasting media

Have recently acquired some very large shot blasting gear and safety equip, but don't know the best media to use for large scale blasting of heavy plate, Its got to be reasonably cheep as the stuff id be blasting is often big and outside so media would be of one use only.....

Any suggestions, iv heard some just use kiln dried sharp sand?

Chilled iron would be good if your kit is h.duty enough,sharp sand is the stuff that causes silicosis be very careful if you have employee's etc etc ,,,,my local blaster uses an old container with a false floor to reclaim glass seems to work well for him.....what kind of gear did u get may help answer more fully ..

It arrived Christmas eve so I really haven't had a good look, guy I got it from is a mate so I trust him not to have tucked me up, its a pot on wheals standing at about 5' high, looks like dryer then a couple of air fed motors to adj the media, 4 tool hydro-vane road compressor, and output hose is about 2" hose no nozzle just a cast type reducer on the end to about 1/2".... air consumption looks huge....

I had heard that from sand which was why I wasn't keen, also looking for a decent supplier..



prob only use it once or twice a year so hardley worth setting up a reclaim, have a machine I'm refurbing at the moment which will be the gunny pig... thickness of metaerial to blast will be around 1/4" plate>

have a look here at least until roger arrives think he uses jbl supafine grit.......look at other products in shop as well..

When we had a setup at work i think it was steel shot that was used, but might have been chilled iron shot. Not a big recaim unit, but usually done in an old container with the side cut off. The majority stays in the container.


For heavy paint/rust steel grit is probably better than shot, much more aggresive.

Snowy if its for mc overhaul,are you looking at mostly paint or serious rust removal ?media like glass can be reused whereas steel/iron can go rusty,not so good if its not all removed either ,stains the floor as well .......blasting might look expensive but produces a great surface for painting and can save time compared to wire brushing etc prep.......any amount of reclaimation is worth a go .......

Not chilled iron for single use - far too expensive.

Use J-Blast Supa with professional equipment to blast external ironwork.

rust and flaked paint, often equipment thats worked in earth and stored outside, so you can imagine the state....

the kit I'm talking about is about 20-40' long and 8' w sometimes bigger will be blasted just on a hardcore yard...

this is the sort of thing, I used to sub out but often I want to blast prior to welding for ease of prep...

use j blast supa expendable grain size 0.2 to 1.5 its about £115 per tonne wolverhampton abraisives

i use it sometimes on verry light stuff but it wouldnt be suitable for what u are wanting to remove its not abraisive enough no cutting power +the health issues with silica
