Laser levels?

Been meaning to get a laser level since I have a load of work in the next couple of years, will be casting a lot of concrete floors and plates that I wanna get straight. I will probably have to do foundation work and do some grading infront of the house when I replace gravel with pavers.

To that end I am looking for a suitable laser level. I believe for my outdoors purposes a rotary laser with receiver is a good fit. But then I also read that the Bosch GLL 3-80 which is a line laser, can work with a receiver too like a rotary laser.

This sounds real interesting, if you could use the same tool for indoors and outdoors stuff. I am mostly planning outdoors stuff but I wouldn't say no to a useful indoor tool for the same outlay of money.

The question is if the GLL 3-80 is any good for that kind of work? I'm likely maxing out at 15 meters distances here.

I use one of these, works ok outside with the receiver, but you need to move about slowly. Not as good as a rotary one, but gets me there. Always cheaper to buy the bits seperate. A beam outside is hopeless if its bright day. Green better than red, reds cheapest

I use one of these on a regular basis been faultless , green was twice the price when I bought it !
great for setting out and as above easy to use outside with a receiver .

people do seem to have good reports about the Huepar laser levels too and a keen price .

I made a bracket (in red) and then I attached a piece of white PVC water pipe to my plate compactor when I was finish grading inside the building for concrete. Cheap $40 laser, was hard to see, hence the white rod.

Your meant to yeah, you can check them yourself though, good enough for most jobs anyway.

I bought a Milwaukee green Cross line one a few months ago. Very bright. When it first arrived I was playing, as you do, managed to put a green line right round our entire road.
The recievers are available as an extra, but not had any visibility issues yet, although I tend to use mine inside. They are handy in the bright sunshine though when I've used them in the past.


Work have been using dewalt ones for a while, but the milwaukee has a much better range than their ones.

I honestly couldn't imagine mucking around trying to see a line laser.
We use Leica. I don't think there is much in the lasers but I think Leica receivers are alot nicer than others. A digital receiver makes life a lot easier. It means a digital readout of how far out of level you are in mm.
A manual grade laser allows you to tilt the laser level in a single plain for digging pipe runs or basic slopes. It just sets a grade between two set points
Dual grade lets you set 2 grades often on a screen on the front of the laser to a specified angle.
Other options are setting out and a lock for using the laser horizontally for setting out.

i generaly use a yellow tape on the laser the red shows up real well with it over a distance

You can check the accuracy yourself. Look up 'two peg test' (for a level). If the result of that test does not meet your requirements, then you can send it off for calibration.

Even with something that is not in the best shape, you can do acceptable work so long as you try to equalise backsights and foresights.

Another vote for the Leica, good solid unit with very good battery life. Not sure about the other makes but on the Leica receiver you can adjust the level of accuracy, this is very handy if you are just roughing out levels of stone or hardcore.

Price does matter. The GLL 3-80 is what I would've said is at my upper limit.

I've been looking at a used Laserliner Autosmart, it's a rotary laser with receiver. I think it's some german brand, seller asks 150€. I really can't find much on it though. The same company seem to have more expensive units.

I'm primarily aftr something that works 360 for out door use. The GLL 3-80 is a 360 linelaser so for this reason I was considering that particular model, since it could be used as a rotary with a sensor.

The line laser projects a solid line all the way round through a prism. A rotary projects a dot from a spinning head to produce the line. Rotary is for groundworkers bricklayers. The outdoor trades they are rugged and water proof and the receiver can work visibly or audibly. Line lasers are for predominantly indoor trades and project a line to follow. Both useful but do different jobs.

The Bosch will do both. Ive used it to lay over 900m of road forms, meters upon meters of slab, full portal frame buildings, to stud walling, and suspended ceilings.
