laser printer troubleshooting

just bought a (very ) cheap colour laserjet hp2600n.

printed a few test pages/done half a dozen cleaning runs and i'm getting this:




the blue blobs on the left are a shadow.

anyone have any idea what needs replacing?

some websites are telling me its just the toner (c m y all reading 0%) but i'm wondering if its something else?

i *used* to have a really good service manual for my 4100 b&w laser, but not sure if the troubleshooting section will be at all relevant.

the streaks *are* fused, not powdery.

had one myself when they go wrong get rid

if there is dirt on the page its the mirror in the depths on the mechine (i done this before and worked well)

the main problem with mechines is when it prints there is an amount of toner going in to a waste bin int the toner cart this then over fills and then goes on the page

all so the drum and fusing conponents go wrong once gone its gone its not worth replacing

i paid a fiver.
its worth that for parts, so no worries on that.

injet dont bother

lazer much of a muchness when they work they work and well as soon it goes worng clean it if still not working parts only

looks like you've run out of toner.

take the toner cartridges out , shake them and turn them upside down in a circular motion, place them back and see if the printing is better.

Pull the magenta toner out (since its the worst) and see if there are lines on it that match the lines on the paper, to me it looks like knackered seals on the toners and its leaking whats left of the toner onto the image drums.

At work we used to get refilled cartridges for our mono printers and 90% were ok, the other 10% would leave lines and were sent back. The colour printers always got genuine toners as the refilled ones were completely useless.

thats interesting, because it appears there's some magenta toner in the toner bay...

the toners are genuine - well, the colour ones are.

Think you will find that the opc drum cleaning blade is contaminated/worn out. It work like a car windscreen blade and scraped the excess/residue toner off the drum unless like a car blade it gets scored or contaminated and fails to clean off drum and so carries on round and is transferred to page. They can sometimes be removed and cleaned with IPA but don't hold up t much hope (don't refit blade till IPA has fully dryed).
Try pricing up a new opc drum (may come as a kit) maybe a re manufactured one.

ive just noticed that the magenta toner cartridge opens it "flap" a lot sooner than the other colours, and with it removed, the roller/belt goes black.

i'll order some cartridges and see how it goes: £31 for the 3 colours

yes.

It should only have one or the other.
The "drum" (or belt) is where the image gets formed by the laser as a charge or removed charge depending what system it uses. This image then pick up the toner in the image areas, carries it round to the paper where it get pulled off the drum and onto the page by another charge (crona wire). This then gets fixed melted) on the page by the fuser roller. A colour printer will use a similar principle but may require three runs round for the three colours OR the whole image MAY be formed on the OPC belt if that is what it uses. Note which ever type (belt or drum) it uses they are light sensitive ! and can be damaged by excess exposer to light! They tend t be green or a amber colour and protected by a flap/cover.

the green rollers are hidden behind flaps inside the cartridges.

Nope you are all wrong. A colour machine of that design consists of 4 opc (organic photo conductor)drums (black,magenta,cyan,yellow) these create the full 4 colour image almost simultaneously and it is transfered on to the ITB (intermediate transfer belt) via 4 primary transfer rollers.

Because the ITB (black belt) has all 4 colours on it the likely culprit will be the ITB cleaning blade has failed.

Corona wires have been phased out over the years to reduce ozone. Only some big high speed MFD's still use them.

If you do try to clean the ITB blade it will then need re lubricating with zink stearate powder or it will flip.
* But, if the black belt is an ETB then I've got it wrong too

I got one of those 2600n printers, like you dirt cheap, it streaked the copies, though not quite as bad as yours, and the belt doesn't look like "Joseph's amazing technicolour dreamcoat." As I have a couple of Mono lasers, I know it is almost always a cartridge problem when they streak, so fitted new "knock off" cartridges, old ones were almost empty anyway. Result, no more streaks, but it needed the optics cleaning at the same time, and since I did this the image colours don't line up, don't know if it is faulty cartridges, or if I disturbed something in the optics when cleaning.
