Lathe motor wiring

Morning guys .
I removed a motor ages ago from a lathe and the wiring. It was all pre wired so just removed it as is. The wiring is bit of a mess. The green and red wires go to the on/off switch .the other three go to the plug. But the yellow wire went to ground on the old lathe. Why does it need another earth. I can follow what's originally there with new wiring.

If the switch is in a metal enclosure or has a metal face plate it should be earthed along with an earth connection at the motor.
When changing the motor on my Drummond the flex was in a similar condition to that shown above, the insulation was deteriorated and soaked in oil, for a laugh I decided to do a 600V insulation test on it and also check the impedance between the metal of the lathe, switch enclosure and the motor body. To my utter amazement it would have passed a PAT on all but visual, I still changed all the cabling for nice new flex.

Earth wires shoul have their own fixing , do not rely on a cover screw etc for a reliable earth,

The earth wire should also be longer than the phase and neutral. Should the strain relief fail, the last conductor to be broken would be the earth.

I will bolt the earth down on to the big metal metal plate.

Yes, see if you can get some nice crip on tags for the earth connection though.

What are they zx9. Just one other question .the yellow earth wire coming out of the plastic junction .can get rid of that junction and just run another earth off the motor .

Definitely get rid of the choc-block and the cable. Renew the lot. Run a new piece of 3-core to the switch so it includes the earth.

Spot on Seadog, exactly what I was thinking of, you can get them with different size holes for each wire CSA.

Right chaps. Think am almost there. Have replaced all wiring and connections .in my old switch box there is a black wire connecting a terminal. If I run a wire off that to ground then job done...I thinks .

It didn't have one but that's next on the list to make seadog .
