lathe tool post

the 4 tool post on the harrison L5 lathe will only take 1/2inch tools due to the topslide height . i bought a myford tool holder for 3 quid that bolts direct on to the top slide giving extra height . now i can use the larger cheap tools that are available at rock bottom prices at car boot sales i also made a spare toolpost it saves swapping the various tools and setting them up each time

a guy at rufforth sold it to me. i supose there easy to make but for that price there not worth making

My Boxford has a Dickson quick-change holder on it. I fancied starting to use indexable carbide tools (like the second one down in Brightspark's last pic) but shanks in smaller sizes (12 & 16mm square) cost a mint (like everything aimed at model engineers), so I started bidding on 25mm square shank ones on the 'Bay, get them cheap and mill the bottoms off them to make them fit the holder

Mines already got a 4 way toolpost ,wouldn't mind a quick change upgrade at some time though....

Nice one BS,that gives me an idea now instead of buyin a quickchange tool post at £50...I just buy 2 of the standard rocker toolpost at £12 a piece for me mini-lathe,,,,,

i was going to do that but its a pain and theres 2 much overhang on sum of the tools that take the 1/4 hss tool bits as they cant be milled all the way as in my bottom photo

What size chuck do you have BS?..i have a 4" 3 jaw fitted but need a 4 jaw so will go as big as i can afford or can get a backplate for....

a 6inch 3 jaw and an just under an 8 inch 4 jaw

What fitting is the end of the spindle? I ask 'cos my Boxie is not threaded but uses the L00 American taper with locking ring. As it's normally used on big lathes, even the catchplates tend to be huge things... I got a 7" one for £4 from a guy near York ('stationtools' on Ebay), took a facing cut then turned a step on it and bolted on a brand-new Bison chuck (that I was given for free by my ex's brother who worked for a well-known machine tool company in Leicestershire, apparently it just fell into his rucksack ). Result - and surprisingly accurate for a, shall we say, budget chuck. I'll probably wear out before it does!
An 8" L00 backplate can be over £100...

I shall keep my eyes open for the backplates then,can a backplate be smaller od than the chuck? or always the same dia?....L5 is a great lathe but i wish the spindle was larger bore and it was a camlock chuck and......and ......and .....cheers

the 6inch chuck has a 6 inch backplate and the 8inch 4 jaw has a 5 inch back plate oddly

Threaded back plate ,11/2" by 6 tpi.....bore only 0.9".....better than most of the chinese rubbish ,and i do have access to a much larger lathe at work ,but i can wish still wish for a m300 or student with everything i'll ever need

The fore runner to the 11" and later 140.

Retained one of the 4 way tool posts similar to first piccy when i scrapped the 140. Think you can get 1" in two slots and 20mm in other two, used it for screwcutting internal and external, robust.
Cant get it to fit the M300 without jacking up, so free to good home.
