Leaking compressor check valve

I think my check valve started leaking as air was continuisly coming out of the pressure release hose that goes from the check valve to the pressure switch. I've bought a new valve, but the new one also lets air pass when I blow into it in the backwards direction. Have I just bought a crummy replacement or is there something more going on?

Undo the nut that's holding the non return valve spring and check the condition of the valve washer surface, and the check valve seat. It shouldn't leak in the reverse direction. There may be swarf or other contamination from manufacture. Do the same on the old part. There may just be contamination present. If the seal washer is cracked or damaged, then suggest binning.

just in case, there are 3 holes and blowing in the backwards direction will only seal if you block the small hole

By the way, the valve seat sealing washers are called pastels. Search for NRV pastels if looking for spares.
