I have a few torches around, I'd say for the slightly larger torches rechargeable (via usb) is essential these days for convenience.
Not sure what the options are for small pocket torches so it's good to see the suggestions from folk.

A couple of years ago I bought an LED Lenser P2 and was so impressed with the clarity of the illumination that I happily bought another. Looks like the current model is now rechargeable - mine are a single AAA.

Lots on amazon, some appear to have the annouing sos flashing mode and others dont.

I have had two led lenser p2 torches ,great beam very clear,but both have suffered with the
switch playing up.I got new switches sent under warranty but they started working intermittently after time.
olight and fenix do nice torches but they all have multiple modes and it for my 90 year old dad to have in his pocket
when he's going about at night, so he needs something to have just an on/off switch.
The dexton or flintronic might suit,I'll do a bit of research and see

Fan of Olight torches too. Plenty to choose from that meets your criteria but they have different beam patterns for flood or spot. I prefer the flood of the Seeker as I use them mainly for dog walking but for distance I have Warrior too.

A small Maglite would be great shout if it wasn't for that stupid twist switching they insist on using. Even with an aftermarket tail cap switch on them the twist switch still causes problems.
I'm going to have a look at some of the recommendations above to replace my flickery maglite.

This is such a shame. I've had a couple of Lenser P7's - both have died due to the tail switch (One replaced out of goodwill). They're generally really well made torches, but this fault really let's them down. I won't be buying another, as they just aren't good enough for £60.
I have the H7R2 head torch - brilliant piece of kit - rechargeable, very good beam for flood or spot. Had that for years, and apart from a battery pack, and the elasticised headband losing elasticity (After probably 7 years) it's been faultless.
Last cheapie from Amazon lasted a bit over 12 months - rechargeable 18650 I think - really bright, but puny button switch on the end failed in the end - but for £10 it was relatively good value.

I bought several different small LED torches the other week, including the LED Lenser P4Rcore (rechargeable Li-Ion battery, like a long AAA cell) and an Olight I3T. My preferred ones were the Flintronic (linked to above), and the Risemart. Both are single mode, and of similar brightness and beam pattern, with more than enough light output for going about at night. The Olight's cap switch is extremely stiff to operate, and it has two brightness levels, not single mode. I ended up buying a bunch more of the Flintronic torches, which should see me out, if they prove reliable.
