I am designing a the knee connection of a cranked beam and I am having trouble establishing the rules for the length of the weld resisting the bending moment. I have dived into a dozen books for the answer I need and the best tome was the Steel Designers Manual 4th edition (the Black one) and this book has the perfect example to calculate the length of the weld except for one parameter. Please see attachment.
I am unable to find the source for the dimension 80mm. The beam used in this example was a 457x190ub but a later example in the book has the same 80mm for a 356x127ub. My beam is a 150x90pfc so 80mm would cross the NA so I assume is incorrect.
Is any one able to advise me on the procedure for calculating the length of these welds.
