Lighthouse balustrade

The lighthouse is made from 2mm steel sheet folded into a cone from 70mm at the top to 110mm at the base. The light is just some cheap LED light string rolled up into a small jam jar.

I've always known that version as a thief knot

It's a trick knot, set as a telltale, a miscreant is likely to assume its a reef knot, and retie as such after pilfering. Thereby leaving evidence of disturbance.

Yes, you're right! Short ends on opposite sides instead of the same side

I really like the balustrade though

Technically it's a bend not a knot but it is known as a square knot for joining two separate pieces of rope (or whatever you are joining)

i like my knots grandad was a shipwright so he passed that down to me,
" a knot with no name is a useless thing
mearly a tangle in a bit of string,

Sheet bend would be better , and just as fast and easy to tie , double sheet bend if your being fussy.

The customer did specify a lighthouse but left the rest up to me. I made a jig for each side of the knot and just got it red hot and just fiddled about with it till it looked correct.
