Lightweight brake winch

A client of mine that bought a very big fire bowl on a stand from me now wants to cook over it with a raising/lowering grill hung from a bracket of some kind. (Potentially channel section hot bent into an inverted J shape).

I know next to nothing about engineering parts/names but a bit of Googleing tells me that a hand cranked brake winch might do the job. Only problem is they seem to be vastly over rated in terms of lifting capacity & a video I just watched seems to suggest that they run into problems if the load is too light.

I was hoping someone might be able to point me in the direction of a lightweight brake winch? I don't know anything about fishing but I wondered if there's a more suitably rated reel that I could use? If anyone could help direct my aimless Googleing that'd be appreciated! Cheers

I would have thought removing any excess wire rope would get around any spooling issues, any of the hand winches with only just enough rope on would do.

Supposedly on top of the spooling problem they run into, not having enough weight on them also prevents them from lowering. I suppose I could just add "uneccessary" weight to the grill.

As 8ob says, too much cable and not enough weight will be the problem. Make the grill plenty weighty and consider replacing the stock cable with something thinner (possibly stainless if near food). Making the cable bend to a small radius will also not help, so if you can sleeve the winch drum bigger, that will be a benefit.
