Linking compressors

I'm a newbie here and am looking for advice regarding the possibility of linking 2 identical abac 15cfm single phase compressors together to give a greater free air supply for use when blasting, or when painting with 2 pack, when painting the 2 can be used seperatley to power mask and gun but it would be nice to only have one airline to the belt and use the gun from it instead of from a seperate airline is it possible to do this ?

I'd just connect the two tanks via a ball valve so you can run them joined or seperate. Set the pressure switches to slightly different pressures so they don't switch on and off at the same time. This is to avoid surges in the mains.

Thanks very much for that advice, i think i get the general idea, i dont understand the bit about adjusting the pressure switches though, could you explain how to do that ?

You can set the switch-off pressure, usually by adjusting a nut on the end of a big spring inside the switch. This also affects the switch-on pressure, sometimes the difference between the two can be set.

You need to set the switches on each compressor so the motors don't start simultaneously otherwise the surge may trip the mains out.

Ideally a mask should be fed from an oil less compressor, failing that make sure the supply is extremely well filtered. Oil mist on the lungs is not conducive to your prolonged good health.

i have a devilbiss coalescent filter that i will be installing, but i am thinking would i be better to install it so that i can bypass it when i'm just using air tools or blasting ? that way maybe increasing its life span? what do you think?

As already said on above posts,I joined to 50 ltr compressors up connected to a machine mart filter/pressure setting thing. Vale on both compressors outlets so that i don't fill both tanks from one compressor,For Normal work 1 compressor,More wind put both on a few weeks ago i sprayed rear of my transit on a long hose so i used both compressors no problem....One compressor oil free type the other one proper oil jobby.

i went down to my local machine mart shop today to get the airline fittings to make the connections between the 2 compressors and the guy there said that it wasnt possible to connect 2 compressors together in this way because 1 compressor would fill both of the tanks and the other 1 would never kick in.. I had already wondered about this being a possiblity. what do you guys think?

initialy both compressors are turned on and will both run untill max pressure is reached then cut out eg 120psi . when the air is being used the pressure will drop and the compressors will cut back in roundabout 90 psi . if one is slightly set diffrent to the other they wont both start at the same time easing the starting load on the supply wiring . in other words one will cut in at 90psi and the other at 93 psi and both run till the air is replenished to full capacity . some are quite helpful and knowlegable and some a bit well err

thanks brightspark, so if comp 1 cuts back in at say 93psi will it not maintian that pressure through the link with comp 2 therefore not allowing comp 2 to fall to 90psi and kick in to re fill its self ? or will the air usage cause comp 1 to cut in at 93 psi and still not be satisfied before comp 2 kicks in ?

if a small amount of air is being used one compresor will cut back in at say 93 psi and will sustain the pressure . but if more air is being used and the 1st compressor cant keep up with it the pressure will drop below 90psi and the second comp will kick in to top it up and keep up with demand

thanks again for your reply, i am planning on using an air fed mask with a spray gun take off from the same belt, the mask wants about 8cfm and the gun about 10. and a portable dual, soda/sand blasting unit, both have high cfm needs so for these uses then do you think both comps will be used?

for large volume use both will run as nececary for low volume use both tanks can be used but shut one compressor off or close the coupling ball valve off and just fill the one tank using one pump

Here it is, havent fired up the 2nd compressor yet because i have to upgrade the electrical supply to my workshop, but i've had it running on the top comp and it seems to work ok. on the workshop side i have a pcl outlet before the coalescent filter which i can isolate with the ball valve, i'm thinking that this will prevent unneccesary use of the coalescent filter when just using airtools.

8cfm for a mask ???? are you sure i don't know much about masks but that sounds like a whole lot of air for one man to breath my hydrovane 15 would only just run it

they do use a lot of air most of escapes through the face seal so as not to let in any paint mist

they can run from 5.3 min to 6.4 cfm 30 to 100psi pressure

Don't forget you have to consider CFM along with pressure, 8 cfm at 10 psi is 10% of the air by mass as 8cfm at 100 psi.
