Just bought a Lister D stationary engine as a small restoration project. Started to strip it down and want to take the flywheel off. The key is being a bit of a pig to remove. I have tried hammering it but it's solid. Anyone have any suggestions how to go about this?

Heat the key up to break the bond, allow to cool and pack with ice to contract it.

Loads of localised heat and hit the flywheel further in with a good lump hammer and a copper or brass drift...iff you keep hitting the key its going to snap or widen out in the slot and go tighter and give you a world of pain..

Bang in a couple of wedges between the key head and the flywheel. Then use heat.

In the past this has worked, file any damage out of the key way slot make sure its nice and clean.
Then weld a threaded bar onto the end of the key, the heat helps loosen the rust bond then attach a slide hammer to the bar you just welded and pull it out.

Dress up the face of the gib key and try folding wedges between key and wheel, otherwise there is plenty to weld a decent bolt to and make a bridge and draw out,

They usually come with folding wedges and a bit heat, but sometimes they can be a real pain.

First clean the slot up so there is nothing behind the key preventing progress.

I remove them with heat. Has allways worked well.

My father likes them old lister diesel engines. Most are old hand crankers that I have to modify and couple em up to all sorts of old pumps ect. I normally get a call because he has hammered the f@@@ out of the woodruff key and everything surrounding it. All ways take the propane kit round

One more tip.
Clean the key way up.
Sliding wedges between key and flywheel. But only taped in to hold them self's in place.
Long slow gentle heating of the fly wheel, hot enough for the paint just to show signs of browning.
tap the wedges in a bit.
Can of pipe freezer spray on the crankshaft. You want ice forming.
Tap fly wheel towards engine, a tap just to break stickion.
Drive the wedges together, it should start to push the key out.

When it starts to move it will start slowly, then in bigger steps.

Ok, so I filed the pin square,
cleaned the keyway and decided to try a wedge to get the pin out

A few taps with a hammer and I thought something move

Can't really see in this image but the flywheel movers back a few thou. A few more taps and the pin was moving.

More packing and hitting and it was out.

Over the moon. From reading other stories about this on tinternet I was expecting a two week struggle to the death with this.
Bonus was the flywheel is free aswell and that just tapped off after cleaning the shaft.

No have not had it running, no compression, exhaust valve and pushrod bent. Don't know what caused it, no marks anywhere. Also I'm a bit worried about the magneto as I couldn't get a spark off it. Will cross that bridge when I come to it.
