Little submarine

Inspired by the Ictineo and Yefim Nikonov's "secret boat"

I thought I would make a little version.
Won't be too much welding going on but it will have ametuer metal work involved.

Did that barrel ever go under, I can see the large ballast weights but even with those in place I would have expected such a shape to bob on the surface.

Shame they are being left outside to suffer from the weather, you can see the sun is damaging the top half.

The 3rd one, (These are just replicas), sunk twice and hit the bottom and broke up.
The 2nd one had over 50 successful dives.

So basically you have boxes of scrapped 'stuff' and when you require a part as a whole or to construct a shape you have a rummage and select/modify something if it is going to look right?

Yeah I suppose so, I just regret the time I had a workshop in a mates car wrecking yard with the 'take what you want anytime pal', all those bits I could have accumulated

Very much so.
I look at what something can be.
Not what it is.

Didn't Ben Fogle have a go in one of these a few years back? - seem to remember it was a two man thing and the other guy was his partner from rowing across the Atlantic or wherever it was.

Yes it was a rowing boat he crossed the Atlantic in but there was a documentary in fairly recent years where a very similar mini sub to the one discussed here was built and tested. I was sure it was Ben Fogle that presented it and whilst I don't recall him being involved in building it he was inside it for the test and that he'd drafted his partner from the trans-Atlantic row to help him as it was powered by oars. I can't find anything about it online so I'm guessing it wasn't Ben Fogle after-all.
